Title: First Bow Complete
Post by: scrub-buster on May 15, 2009, 08:50:00 PM
This is my first attempt at building a bow.  It is an osage selfbow, 65" from tip to tip.  I was hoping for 50#, but ended up with a 35# bow after trying to get the tiller even.  I used a piece of deer antler for a rest.  It is not near as beautiful as some of the bows that you guys make, but it flings arrows.  I have plans to sinew back it and add some snake skin this fall, hopefully that will add a few pouds.  I am hooked on bow making now.  I have three other bows roughed out and can't wait to see how they turn out.  I would like to give a big thanks to all of the knowledgeable people on this site that offer free advice and tips to beginners like me.

Tiller looks great, just remember, kids need nice bows too, so when one comes in light you can find a home for it. It's worth getting the tiller right the first time, the next one will be better for sure.

That bow shows you have the hard part figured out; the tillering. You will get better on judging weight on your next one. Very nice job on your first bow.

Just be glad you made it through the tillering process. That is a fine looking bow.

Scrub -

FIRST BOW?  Fantastic.  My first half-dozen were ugly whippy buggahs.  That looks great.

Think about either:
1.  Play with it and learn more and more about shooting form with the real ggod light-draw bow you made (not many can say that).  OR
2.  Cut an inch off each end and you may end up at about 45# and you still have a real nice bow you made.

keep it up.

Thanks for the kind words.  I have many more bows in mind.  I chased a ring on 2 more staves.  I am going to try a D bow next.  If I can wake up early enough tomorrow afternoon, I am going to cut some more osage.  The neighbor lady told me to cut all that I wanted.
