This is a 6 inch filet knife of 15N20 carbon steel. The handle is jigged bone.

Is there something special you are doing to not have that thing look like an S after dunking it in the HT oil? I certainly do not have the set up you have or the quality oil(Veg oil Vs. Parks I assume) but dang to I get some wows in my thin blades when I dunk them.
Very, very nice BTW
Bobby, Nothing special. But,.... I am careful with the blade just before and during the quench. I hardly do any grinding of bevels before the quench on a thin blade like this. I may 45 the edges to find the center margin. Thermo cycle. I also don't expose the blade to wind while hot and heat it evenly. Bring it out and slice the air and slice the oil. Don't fan it side ways to get to the quench. Don't paddle the oil with the blade. It will sometimes still warp just because but I draw it back before any straightening attempts.
Think about the dynamics of the quenching process and the heating of the blade and remember that evenness is so important. Even heating, even heat extraction.
Very Nice Lin,I'm going to ask a dumb question. What is jigged bone.
Dana
Thank you Lin - that makes perfect sense.
It's bone that has been textured in one of several ways with a kind of cutter. Some are random, some are pretty consistent in pattern.
That's a nice looking blade. Clean and simple.
I have had a stack of Ray's 15N20 laying in a tool box with my fillet knife profile drawn on them for two years.
This is just the inspiration I needed to cut one out yesterday.
And guess who called me last night??
Ray Kirk.
That's a great looking filet knife......really nice jigged bone.
Darcy :campfire:
Don't get no better than that.
I looked at some of that jigged bone on Culpepper's table, interesting stuff. Probably should have picked some up. Just too many cool materials at that AR Show.
