Title: stamp cold or hot?
Post by: ScottA on May 27, 2014, 08:12:00 PM
Just curious as to everyones preferences: stamping logo/touch-mark in the blade cold or blade hot from the forge?

thank you for reading/reply in advance

I etch my logo mostly, but I stamp cold when I do.

Can I add on a question....when stamping cold for a typical makers mark, how many tons of force does it take?

The last time I saw a post on this I saw a 20 ton jack, but I was not sure how much force was typically used.

Thanks

....hmm not exactly sure on the tons it would take specifically. I have been doing both (hot & cold) and with a new sharp stamp on cold annealed it does not take much with a hammer, in fact at first I dented the other side of smaller folder blades :-(

I hot stamp all the forged stuff. I still need to get a cold stamp made really small to fit folder tangs.

I cold stamp with a 50 ton jack in a press.

Since I forge with rough marks left in, I hot stamp.  I guess I need to come up with a cold stamp sometime though.

I mostly etch now but if I do stamp it's cold with a 12 ton bottle jack in a similar press setup to what Karl uses.
