I know not everyone wants or needs a spike on their axe, so I made one that is a bit more civilized. It has smooth green micarta scales and a flat hammer end. OAL is 16" w/ a 4" cutting edge. With a choked up grip, it should work great for small tasks and even processing game.

Cool look to it.
Oh, yeah! That's a fine looking tool. Well done, Ben! Glad to see that one finished!
I like that a lot! Looks very useful!
Thanks guys!
Very nice. I like this one better than the ones with the spike as the only use I would have for it would be hunting/scouting. Shame you didn't have another rediculously long piece of insanely figured ironwood for this one. I'm guessing 4140 again? I have a couple of questions for you. Do you harden just the edge or the entire head? Also, how is the 4140 holding up on these hawks? I know the carbon content is a little on the low side for knives. Just curious because I have a little 4140 on hand that I might could give this a try with.

looks like modified norse axe design...nice.
I like it.

Hi Matt, yes it is 4140. It will harden to appx. 55rc, which is just right for an axe. I through harden the whole thing, temper to 400 degrees, and then spring temper the tang.
Here are a couple pics of me hardening them and then the spring tempered tang. I sand blast them after the main tempering cycles so I can the colors better.

Very nice. I may have to try something similar to this once I get caught up. Thanks for the info Ben.

Looks like another winner Ben.
