Post by: Rick Enos on September 07, 2013, 04:38:00 PM
I am rebuilding a knife for a friend. His father was in the military & was issued this Cattaraugus. The handle leather was gone & he had wound a thick twine around on the handle.but after researching pictures I am missing the last piece of steel on the handle.Looks to look like a hammer head a waffle design.any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

I have a Cattaraugus.  IIRC the Q stood for Quartermaster.  It was a knife meant to be used by the Quartermaster Corps. The butt cap is a piece of steel cross hatched for lack of a better term.  Probably intended to be used as a hammer for hammering on crates etc...  It also looks to be made from 3 pieces.  Like steel washers.

Yes. explained perfectly--cross hatched-there are only 2 pieces of steel on this knife I have the first but need the crosshatched(hammer) piece.I've purchased the leather washers & have them installed.& thought I would make the piece, but better If I find an old knife & get the cross hatched piece from another knife.Been looking on **** & looks like 50.00 is the low end.Thought I'd try here & see what happens.

I can take some pictures of my 225Q if that would help you re-create it.

Rick-  I will send you mine to take that piece off of it if you can put some other type of handle on it. Let me know if you are interested.
