Title: Knives for Blade Show 2013
Post by: kbaknife on May 17, 2013, 07:16:00 PM
Fist one done and a lot of work to do in the next 10 days.
This is a hunter I made from a kerosene welded stack of .090" 15N20 that we use in Damascus.
A buddy of mine pushed me in this direction.
Preliminary performance is awesome!

Stainless guard and Ebony take-down:

That looks awesome!!! I've been thinking of trying three layer San Mai with 15n20 on outside and a carbon core. This might push me in that direction.

Karl, that is a beauty for sure and just the right size.  Have a great time at the Blade show.

Another one that I've shown before a few weeks ago - I think.
Just did a couple better photos today.
A W1 Brute de Forge with Paper Micarta scales and bullseye pins:

Very nice brute utility.  I hope you have a great show in Atlanta.

I would be interested to hear the working qualities of the 15n20 knife. What kind of performance you have experienced with it, how it forged, that kind of thing. I know Ray uses and likes it but I didn't get to see him at Fisk's shop visit due to an injury he sustained.

Another one for 8-Q:

San Mai with hot blued carbon steel core?  This may be my favorite blade I've seen from anyone.  If its a takedown, I'd love to have another handle made out of a nice hardwood for a night out on the town, though that one would be almost indestructible for a day in the field.

Love all of them,
Matt

Matt, the blade is not hot-blued.
When the blade is completed, it ALMOST! looks like a regular ol' simple carbon steel blade.
Then it is etched in Ferric Chloride.
The stainless is basically uneffected by the acid, but the acid attacks the core steel and etches it black. And the more manganese, the blacker it is.
That's why I use 1095 in my San Mai.
