I have a friend that makes some forged heads.
He makes Bodkins and Swallowtails and some other medievil points.
I thought it would be cool to see if any of you talented gents have made anything like this before. I will post pics as soon as I can find them on my computer.
I have never tried it but I may at some point.
I look forward to seeing what your friend dose.
Chris
I have one of Doug Campbells damascus heads. Mounted and ready for a worthy critter.
I once knocked myself upside the forehead with the back end my hammer...does that count as a "forged head?" :knothead:
I haven't started forging yet, but I've been kicking around making some using stock removal. Not necessarily midievil style, but handmade. I'd love to seesome pics. That Damascus one would be sweet too.
This set of heads are made by KHalverson. He has posted here in the past with some very nice knives and other items. If I remember right, these are from an antique saw blade. I know they are pretty hard, but I can sharpen with a file. and they do get sharp.
I am still working on the picture of the Medievil heads.
Khalversons trade points.

WOW! I had seen one or two of your before Jeff but not that many. I really like them all, but the screw on is really cool.
Thank you,
CTT
Those are all great looking heads! It would be awesome to take an animal with a head that you made yourself. That screw in head is really cool, what does it weigh?

WOW! My computer skills have prevailed once again and I was able to figure out how to get my picture where I needed it.
Anyhow, Here are the heads my friend Scott has been making. He likes the old english warbows(90#) and all the garb to go with it. He makes as much of his own gearas he can, from arrows to bows to clothes. I will try to get a picture of his blades, for now it will be this shot of his forged heads. Yes he hunts with his wares.
Thanks for looking.

NICE!
maybe one of these years i will hafta try that.
All of those heads are on 3/8" or 1/2" arrow shafts.
Wow Steve, nice heads... Nice Hammer, Can I ask what it is(brand)?
Cheers
David
David,
I think you are talking about my hammer? That is a Brent Bailey hammer. Flat on one end & convex on the other for stretching hot metal...Jeff

Chuck, I have been thinking of making some heads to hunt with. Can you point out the heads your friend hunts deer with? I want to consider the effectiveness of a design and the legality as well. This is giving me something to base my starting design. This is a very interesting thread.
Nice work Jeff.
I shoot carbon arrows...you have a few choices:
1) Take a steel glue on broadhead adaptor and cut a slot to slip in a forged broadhead. That way you can screw it in.
2) Slip & glue a wood dowel into the carbon shaft. Then slot the end to haft on a broadhead with a flat tang...Indian style.
3) I like the best is to make your broadhead tang round to fit into a carbon shaft. Now your tang is the insert with a one piece broadhead...tippit

Lin, I think all of the heads that Scott made are "Period correct" heads. His hunting heads are more in-line with what Kevin made for me and the heads that Jeff showed. Kevins are sigle bevel and around the 2:1 or 3:1 ratio and SHARP.
I am sure you know that many states have laws against Barbed heads, other than that I would think anything in 2:1 or 3:1 would work fine.
I can't wait to see what you come up with.
Thanks for posting.

I'm really liking the last head you photoed Jeff. That is more what I had in mind.
Thank you Jeff for the hammer info!!
Cheers

Thanks man!
Done a few hundred of these over the years and more than a few critters been downed with them. I do like the ones some of you are doing with the forged round ferrule though. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v82/gotahunt/100_1274.jpg)
