I decided to finish this knife out. It is a forged 5160 blade. The jade micarta overheated when drilling and caused blistering around the bolts and thong. Live and learn. So two months later I belt finished it and am practicing stone sharpening. I have also learned I need to make my guard longer for a blade up grip and the handle longer for thong cord clearance of skin.

That would work great for me, I have no pinkie finger!!!! Great looking knife!
It would work ok for me too, because when I'm holding a knife edge up, my thumb is still behind the guard. The short handle would be OK too, as I almost never hold a knife like a hammer handle unless it's a really big knife.
I've noticed most people when they pick up a knife to see how it feels grab it like that, but rarely use it that way unless they are chopping. I don't chop with a small knife.

I agree bladepeek. It's hard to see in this photo but the cutting edge is up while my knuckles are toward the ground. I would hold a knife like this to separate the front quarters from an upside down deer for example.
And I'd still have my thumb up on top, whichever way the edge is. Guess that's why there are so many different handle shapes - so we can each find one that feels good :)

You can send all your ugly cast offs to me.....LOL!
I dont know man, that guard looks sufficient to me. I find that while longer ones give me peace of mind they sure dont look as nice as shorter or guardless knives. Very nice.
I like it also. Nice work.
I guess i am a fan of Ugly !
I am with Ron, i would take care of any of your Uglies. LOL
I love that category.
