Title: I want your opion please

I bought a home made file knife I like it but dose not seem to hold a edge very long is this common with this type of knife? also it did seem to sharpen up good an I was told that they will rust after I sharpend it I put a light coat of cooking oil on it is that ok? thanks ED

         The oil is fine. It will rust, but so will lots of hunting equipment. It just takes a little maintenance like you're doing. As for the problem of not holding an edge, I cant say much to that. For a knife to be very useful it has to hold an edge reasonably well. Nothing magic about it. It depends on three things: the steel, the heat treat, and the edge geometry. You called it home made which is not a bad thing. But some home made knives are better than others. One of those three elements might be less than perfect.

Do you have a picture of it?  Might help to see what the edge looks like.

its anza knife and all those I have seen I believe  are hollow ground.<><
