Title: Remember that old Barlow you had when you were a kid?
Post by: Doug Campbell on August 06, 2012, 12:34:00 AM
Well this aint it...   ;)   Liner lock, stag scales, Damascus blade, backbar and bolsters. Blade is right at 3/32" thick, thickest point at the back of the scales is 7/16", 5/16" at the front of the bolsters, 3 7/16" closed, 6 1/8" opened. Oh and she's a left hander too, ordered that way...

Another great learning experience with a couple of hiccups but I worked thru em and think she turned out pretty nice.

As most of you know my shop time or any free time in the summer is very limited. The nice thing I found out about these little folders is they don't take up much room... I've got my hand tools and parts I need in one of the divided plastic boxes that I can just put out of sight under the bench and get out when I get a little time. A few minutes here and there and fore long she's shaping up like a knife. Yep were having fun.

Thanks for looking!

Gotta love that one, Doug. "Pretty nice" is a definite understatement about the way the knife turned out!

Very nice Doug. It's funny because just this weekend Lin and I were talking about old folders we liked and the Barlow was one we both mentioned. Thanks for sharing. Well done.

Doug,
Boy does that bring back a memory and how could I ever forget it? I would like to share a true  "cause it happened to me" action packed story and it involves a Barlo knife like that...If you are weak in the stomach please don't read this..
Back when I was about 10 years old I had 5 more brothers and the oldest was named Mike...Well one of my other brothers got a new Crossmen pump b.b. pellet rifle for Christmas and that upcoming spring we were all outside running and swinging on a Big rope hanging from a big limb from an Oak tree...You know the type you would hang a Big buck on to cure...Well as I was climbing that rope my brother Steve who is 1 year older then I was mean as a wolverine on a bad hair day and Steve tormented me like the devil himself...Anyway I was about 1/2 way up a 18' rope and my brother desides to swing me around like a cowboy trying to rope a steer and say's to my brother Mike "Try and shoot the swinging Target" and I was like       :scared:      and Mike proceeded to crank that pump about 10 times which was it's maximum power and back in 73 those things were like a .22...Well I screamed for Mercy and pleaded "Mike Please don't listen to Steve he's posessed by the devil " ! Well Mike was like the Rifleman Chuck Conner and kind of resembled him with that square face and our  family dimple in our chins...Mike tooked steady aim and my head was spinning back and forth watching and eyeing the muzzle of that cannon he was about to set fire too and I was still pleading for forgiveness of all my sins and  "POP"  went that crossman and like slow motion "CRAAAAAAAAAACKKKK"... I  SCREAMED LIKE A GIRL I DID!      :o      Well I fell 9 foot from the rope looking like I committed suicide cause I got shot right smack in the middle of the 10 ring " YES THE BUTT" and boy was I SCREAMING,FLOPPING LIKE A FISH OUT OF THE WATER !  Well here comes Mike running to finish me off I thought with a second shot and I was still flopping and Mike swooped me up and put his hand around my mouth so Mom and Dad wouldn't here this little piggy squealing and he got me behind this Big tree and I for a split second thought I was Jesus his Savior cause of his pleading and begging me not to send him to "Hell" (that would be Dad and his belt) and Mike said "Please don't tell Mom or Dad and I'll give you anything your heart desires "!  Well here comes the good part cause I now owned him and he was my servent for life.. He pulled everything out of his pocket like one them carnival guys do when you shoot and ring the bell and I chose his "Barlo knife"... I was proud to own that knife and would turn my light on at night just to study it and open and close it and it was my crown or trophy so to speak....The sad thing besides me having been shot in the 10 ring was my brother Mike who I Loved and looked up to and admired was killed that next year in a car accident with 2 of his best friends and I lost that "Barlo knife" over the years that I wanted to remember him by always...You posting that Barlo made me smile today Doug and I miss my brother but that knife you just posted is a reminder that I will one day see Mike again and Man will we laugh about that event that took place back then... Thanks Doug for sharing that knife pic with me... It made my day...Very nice knife you made there Doug but I won't ever be able to look at one ever again without thinking of my big brother Mike...  God Bless,
                              Keefers <><

I love the way the stag scales morph into damascus bolsters with not transition visible. Beautiful fit and finish.

That is a nice folder Doug!
I wish I had my Barlow back, no idea what hapened to it!  I still have the custom pouch I had made for it for the grand total of $5.00 at a local shoe repair shop (those are rare now).
