Hey all:
I do not yet (key word) temper my own knives. when I get them back from the place I get them tempered they have a slight black coloring on them. I figure it is decarb. My question is... is there a way to get this stuff off without working myself to death? Does anyone use something like engine carb cleaner?
I just don't want to mess up the finish i put on them to start with.

Several makers I now like to soak the blades is Vinegar to dissolve the scale. I personally haven't tried it, I like to hand sand until my arms fall off.
Chris, when I temper my blades there is a straw color and decarb. I know you take your knives to finsh state but you should be able to take the final grit and remove the color or decarb with very little work. I normaly do mine on the belt sander and then hand sand because I heat treat and temper with my blades at 320. Call me if you need to

I can take it off with wet 800 grit. I am just looking for a little fast way to get it off. These are the skinners I showed you and I need to get one out quick to my uncle before his bear hunt.
