Title: Ironwood Hunter
Post by: kbaknife on December 29, 2011, 11:37:00 AM
Unless I work day and night for the next few days, this will be the last knife I make for 2011.
A really sweet piece of Desert Ironwood mates up quite well with what I call "Radical Random" and stainless steel take-down fittings.
The blade is hot-blued 336 layers of 1095 and 15N20.
Blade comes with a crested spine.
Happy New Year!

Nice one Karl. That spine shot shows some interesting patterns in the steel.

I know what you're seeing there, Lin, but I do believe that's just the way the camera "reads" the lighting, and/or possibly what happens when re-sizing.
That ziggy-zaggy "thing" really screwed up the picture of the knife below. The hand sanding on that blade was perfectly straight, but ends up goofy after all of my editing is done.
I think my camera is a '99.    :(

Very nice indeed Karl.  You are bang on with the handle and blade pattern match. Great way to finish off 2011.

Karl, the 'stepped' diagonal lines in the pics are likely due to the compressions process when the pics are resized.  You'll likely see less of them in the full size pics on your computer.

Nonetheless, that's one fine knife, sir.

Rusty

Correct, that's why I mentioned that above. It's just the way they seem to turn out sometimes.
Thanks for the kind words.

Chuck, it's a three part affair with a tool steel center and a stainless "jacket" on each side when finish ground exposes just a little more than the cutting edge.
The stainless protects the major portion from rust and inhibits hardening as well.
Here is a San Mai done with 1905 and a nickel bearing steel - 203E. Not quite the same as stainless.
The stainless process makes one re-think knife making and is a very touchy and precise project.
