Not sure how this will turn out yet, but I have tried three times to get this one right and I think I have it. I tried forging it entirely, but there was some air hardening problems with the 5160. This is 1084 and although I filed a lot of it, I believe it would handle the forging better and not break at the handle.

Very Cool.
You are getting fancy, i like it
that is just too cool
what kinda quench would you use on that type of knife lin?
I successfully quenched it this afternoon in Parks 50. I can harden in medium speed too, but I use the parks more and more for 1084.
Again, this is 1084 and I changed to this steel for this handle style because of the 5160 air hardening and breaking in the low red to black color while lightly straightening. I think I can adjust my forging procedure a little and continue to use 5160.
This impressed on me that sometimes , on rare occasions, the steel choice may help or hurt your chances, merely in the forging of it. I had never considered that as I do now. The relative narrow and thin cross section of the frame is what lead to the failure.
I'm looking forward to seeing it finished and what style of sheath you choose Lin.
Thanks for posting blades like this one, sure gives the rest of us food for thought.
Very nice Lin,can't wait to see the finished product.
