Title: Stabilized Black Palm Knife Handle
Post by: Idahomike251 on September 24, 2011, 10:44:00 PM
Black palm I just received from the stabilizing folks kept on pulling at me like the last donut left in a Krispy Kreme box. Since I had few more days left before leaving for Montana I just had to do a couple of black palm handled knives. Black palm has a very unusual and  striking "grain" structure, and it turned out great as a main handle material (bottom knife), or it can also be used as a decorative touch on a knife (top knife with spalted myrtle and black palm cap).

Those are very nice!  The Palm works well as a accent and primary handle material.

Have a fun and safe hunt!

I was just talking to a friend yesterday about how much I like black palm-yours look very nice.  I saw a few knives once that had black palm scales that were cut on bias and all the little needle ends looked like they were coming out at you at an angle.  Love the looks.  Good luck on your hunt.

Where would a fellow pick up some small pieces of black palm. Could someone give me some information on this, thanks Chuck.

You can get them from:
www.woodcraft.com (http://www.woodcraft.com)   or   www.cookwoods.com (http://www.cookwoods.com)
They don't come stabilized, so you will need to get them stabilized at:   www.stabilizedwood.com (http://www.stabilizedwood.com)  . Black palms are grass species, and therefore fibrous, so these buggars are really difficult to work without stabilizing.
Best regards,
Mike Okamura

I have a friend who built two longbows with the back and belly veneer being black palm with ebony riser, and bamboo inner cores you talk about some sweet looking longbows.

Mike,  are you going to the rock shoot in Moses Lake?   I have been wanting to add one of your  knives to my collection.   I love your work.

Hi Clay, Nice to hear from you again. April 13/15 for the Rock Shoot unfortunately is the same date as the Oregon Knife Show (of which I've already signed-up to attend). I will be at the 2012 Longbow Safari in Idaho for sure, and I am planning to attend the Western States Trad Shoot as well, so may be you can stop-by and say "Howdy" at those events. Mike O.

Mike,

Tricia and I will be at both events you mentioned.  I will be sure to stop by your booth to chat.  I have thought about attending the Oregon Knife show, I just haven't taken the time to do that yet.  I would hate to miss the Rock Shoot.  The family looks forward to it every year.
