Title: Deer hide for a sheath?
Post by: David Dumke on September 21, 2011, 12:16:00 AM
So I bought hunting knives today. Remington is the brand, I know some of you might be more apt to buy a local maker knife or some thing but there were 3 for 20 bucks and I liked the way the looked. I sharpened them a little when I got them out and they can take the hair off my arm, haha.

I HATE this case though! I take out the biggest one and there is residue from the sheath on the blade. I am thinking that this will cause the blades to dull because it's obviously cutting the inside.

All the blades have this issue. My question is, though it isn't season yet and I haven't gotten a deer and very well may not, is deer hide good for making a sheath or should I look elsewhere? I really want to keep the hide on my first deer regardless of when it may happen but I'm debating between just keeping it as a memento or trying to craft with it.

tips or suggestions? Thanks.

Pictures of the knives tomorrow, right now it's time for bed.

The inside of your sheath will wear in eventually, don't woory about it dulling the blade. Deer skin is too thin to protect the knife, you need a thicker heavier leather for the body of the sheath. You could cover the sheath that you have with deer skin, it gives it a unique frontier look. A little leather glue to adhere the deerskin to the sheath will do the trick.

Here's a sheath that I did.

not sure if the deerhide glue on would work for the sheath for these knives but I sure do like the look of it.

David, if you look close you can see that I've also got it laced along the edges of the sheath. Do you have a picture of the sheaths that you have? Go to the knife forum, maybe they can help you.

Deer rawhide from the top of the neck area is thick enough. Been using it for years with no problem.
