Title: Bowie for TG'er
Post by: Lin Rhea on September 06, 2011, 07:05:00 PM
I just finished this one for one of our fellow TG'ers. It has a 10 inch blade and the OAL is about 15 3/8. I appreciate you Lance.   :campfire:

Lance and I have talked for many months over the phone and that is one of the extra benefits of making knives as well you bow makers can attest. Making friends. Lance has been patient with me with not one word toward rushing me. This makes me want to do as good a job as I possibly can.

Hey guys and gals,
I would be the lucky recipient of this masterpiece.

I wish I had the words to express what a great process it has been putting this knife together. It started as just a simple Bowie from one of Lin's patterns but after a few phone conversations it changed a bit. Then Lin started really working on forging Damascus, and it was not my turn yet so we changed it a bit more. I'll bet the file Lin has on my knife is the size of a phone book with all the drawings and pictures I sent him. Lin probably spent at least as many hours scouring the earth searching for just the right piece of stag for the handle as he did forging the blade.

I could go on and on but at the end of the day when someone asks me why I picked this knife maker over some of the other great knife makers out there it's an easy answer.

Good knives, made by a better man!
Thanks Lin,
Lance

That's a fantastic piece right there, Lance and Lin.
Is the butt from the same steel?

Thank you guys.

Karl, the butt cap is from the same material as the guard and the ferule. They are squeezed tighter than the blade.

Holy moly, Lin! That is the coolest looking knife I think I have ever seen. It's not the one I want to haul around on a hunting trip, but it would be the one that could be the centerpiece of any exhibition of what a great bladesmith can produce.

Absolutely incredible in all respects.  That is not only a workhorse, but an heirloom-quality piece that will no doubt be passed down to future generations.  If I type any longer, I'm liable to drool all over my keyboard.        :clapper:

There's a lot in that knife that some might overlook- such as how the stag is so well fitted to the hardware it required almost no grinding/filing to adjust it to the guard is masterful!

I have admired this one several times, throughout the process. You know I am a sucker for a nice clam shell guard, this one is the best one I have ever laid eyes on.  I will be looking at this one repeatedly when I get the nerve to try it on my own.

Just wanted to update this with pictures of the sheath made by Paul Long. The pictures will speak for themselves, but Paul was outstanding to deal with, and even though he was loaded down with work from the ABS show he still had this sheath back in my hands 7 days after I mailed the knife to him. It was an absolute pleasure to do business with him.

Leather and gator skin, always the best way to dress a Bowie knife.

And Lin I've been like a seven year old with a new toy, anybody that comes around gets to see and hear all about my new knife whether they want to or not.
Thanks again bud.

Gotta say that this knife and sheath combination really blows me away. It's hard to imagine a collection centerpiece any nicer. My problem is that I consider myself a user, not really a collector, even though I have quite a few very nice knives. This set belongs in a prominent display case that everyone will immediately see -- or maybe a museum!

As Lin said, you betcha. This knife was built to retire the Bagwell that has been with me almost every day since 2007.

Thanks Allan,
This one is usually on display on my right hip now that the sheath is done. But when I'm wearing a gun it moves to the weak side. While traveling it goes bettween the seats of the jeep. Bowie knives work better when they are close at hand when you need them, they don't work as well in the safe.

All the credit goes to Lin, and Paul. All I did was save my lunch money.

Thanks again,
LP
