Title: Antler handled knives!
Post by: jmar595 on February 03, 2007, 08:37:00 PM
I am going to try my hand with making one of these. Anyone have any, could u post pics. please, I would like to get some ideas for them. I have one antler in particular that I can't wait to make into a knife, just fits in the hand so nicely. Also does anyone know where to get affordable good blade blanks?

I can't find the pics of the ones i made with some sheds that were given to me.  i used the base of the antler as the palm and found a nice guard through Koval Knife company.  here is a pic of one i made using a blade from Crazy Crow and some osage.

good luck, watch out it's addictive        :)

Here it is. I have some more they look to be all the same type of antler. I have some cut up parts I will use one day for tip overlays, and I have a few that may be handles.

Jmar,
I love the knife I just made with a Helle blade from a sponsor here, darktimberdesign.com.  Sharp as he!! and a good price.  Several blades to choose from.  Here's the one I made last month with the guthook blade with antler burr on the end.  Any deer I get around here with antler big enough for the whole handle is a wall hanger!

Here is the first knife I made. The blade is from a old file. I ground it slow where the metal never got to hot to touch. I inlaid tourquoise stones in the handle.                                                            (http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u164/goatpacker/homemadekinfe009.jpg) (http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u164/goatpacker/homemadekinfe010.jpg)

I have a weakness for damascus to but I didnt make the knives or do the scrimshaw on them a friend of mine made the knives and his wife does the scrimshaw on them..The toothpick also has a damascus blade and the handle is a leg bone from a deer..I have another knife that has a cable damascus blade with a snapping turtle shell as the handle slabs..

Can't wait to turn that one into a knife. I bought a skinner balde blank on ebay the other day but it has the defined handle area that isn't a tine I will find one that will work for the antler. I know u can cut the handle area into a tine and make it work, but I think the skinner knife I will try my hand at a wood handle, maybe put an antler butt on it though. We'll see. You all have inspired me with all the wonderful knives u have. What do use use to glue the blade into the antler with, is it epoxy or something?

You can see some antler knives on the Customer Creations page on our website. We have Helle blades which are one of the best. We also have many happy customers here on TradGang and are a sponsor.

We just added a new small blade, 2 1/4" long for those looking for a little blade.

I would like that very much RickD. I won't be able to do it for a little while, low on funds, but I will take u up on that soon. I would love to do a knive with elk. The whitetail I have is not real thick, but it holds nice. I looked on Chad's site, there are a lot of really cool ideas on the customer creations page. How do u finish yours anyway, do u use a stain? Also, what do u glue the blade in with, epoxy?

Ok, I'm blaming you guys for this. After reading this far, I got it into my head that I needed to build a knife. So I went to Chad's site and ordered me the Harding kit. If this turns out ok, I will build another one using some really nice red deer antler that I have.

My first knife.  The hafting and handle are mine, the blade was hired out.

This kind of edge works much easier than any steel I've ever used for skinning a deer.  No nicks in hide nor meat.  It cuts a lot of hair while putting the slits in the skin, so its best to skin after using steel for that.

Thanks fellas.  I call it my Mammoth skinner.  Handle antler is from Steve Hohensee's fork-horned eastern Canada moose.  Hafting is selfbow-kilt deerhide. Its been waiting for a blade since the first (or was it second?) MOJam.

I think its a lucky charm, too. Its been hunting with me (and another hunter) three times in the last 3 weeks, and there's been a buck to skin at the end of each day. :-)

Here is one that my Father in Law brought me back from Alaska. It was handmade out of a sawmill blade, and elk antler. The sheath was also handmade with a bear claw and tooth added for character.

This knife is the first antler knife I put together. The antler used is from my 8yr old sons first shed he found.  He found it during his first turkey hunting trip.   We were able to use this knife this past deer season to field dress his first whitetail deer.     The bow in the picture is a bear kodiak 48.  We just got this for him.   Hunter3r put the skineez on it.

I knocked this 'un together, yesterday.

2-3/4" Sandvik 12C27 steel blade
Cocobolo burr bolster with black spacer
4-1/2" Roe deer tine
OAL 8"

I'm debating whether t clip off the last 2" of the tine & put on a flat wood end-cap.

Whaddaya think?
Title: Re: Antler handled knives!
Post by: Ray Hammond on February 08, 2007, 09:53:00 AM
I like the one you built, Rob but the other idea has merit as well...and would be pretty cool with a lanyard hole in brass through it.

If I did it, I might use another pc of that cocobola and put a thin black spacer on either end as well, and cap it with brass?

Its cool like it is, though, bladesmith.

Cheers Ray.
Honestly, the more I look at it, the more I'm tempted to cut it & cap it. As you say, a brass lanyard tube'd look nice in there too.

Right. To the Workcave....

I think it is really cool the way it is with the point. Every other knife has a blunted end, maybe put a strip of cocobolo between the point towards the end and put a brass tube towards the point. I really like it like that, u definately know what it is made of like it is.
