I picked up some Musk Ox horn and would like to use it for a handle on a blade blank that I got off of the internet. Can anyone give me some advice on how to prepare the horn?
Yep, Doug, I am as old as I have ever been. I will be 40 on may 16. Thanks for the input guys. There is an authorized dealer close in leesburg thatg had 39 or so for sale when I visited today. Planning to visit the museum near orlandp on Monday. I am torn between a fighter and the more practical hunter, camp, outdoorsman styles. Not much of a. Ig knofe guy, but Randall was seveloped as a ww II military knife.
Not quite sure what you mean by "prepare'?
And what do you mean by "some" musk ox horn?
Is it the whole horn?
If it's already cut into scales, then use it.
I have a set of horns off of a mush ox that was shot this winter. They look like they have a center core much like a cow horn. Can I heat them in boiling water and pull that core out. Or should I try to dry them dig that core out. They look to better than 1/2 inch thick.
I spoke with D'Alton Holder, one knowledgable guy when it comes to muskox, as I acquired some myself.
The process you will use is long, tedious, and not for the faint of heart.
first, you have to get them completely dried out...eventhough you think they are- they likely are not dry enough.
If you would like to discuss, you can call me at 678-300-2883
