Title: Hunting Knives...What are they???
Post by: tippit on January 23, 2009, 07:23:00 AM
Please keep in mind:

There are a lot of styles of hunting and other knives...BUT this forum is here for only hunting knives.  It took a lot effort to get it started as Trad Gang's main purpose is Traditional Bowhunting.  I don't think anyone foresaw how popular the "Hunting Knives & Crafters" forum would be.  I am so impressed with the talent, cooperation, and friendliness of everyone here...from the Newbie to the Pro.

There are a lot of knife forums on the web for anyone interested in other styles.  Thanks...tippit

Point taken.

I will say that I like to carry at least a couple styles of knives into the woods when I'm hunting. One skinning knife and one large camp knife. Let me know if I get too far out in left field and I'll rein in.

I appreciate this forum. Lin

I for one like a fairly broad range of knives for hunting and like Lin ussually have a few scattered about myself. I regularly use everything from little neckers to bowies to hatchets for dressing critters. Even done it a few times with rocks  ;)  that'll make you appreciate a good piece of steel...

I'm very impressed with the talent and interest we see here and especially the support/mentoring from guys like Lin and Karl. But like Doc said alot went into getting the forum going for us so it needs to be hunting related...

Thanks everybody for sharing!!

Hey Folks I too really enjoy this forum it to me is almost as big of addiction as the act of knife making is!!Just getting to rub cyber elbows with the pros and more expirenced people is a great thing to Me. I made a post of a kitchen knife a while back that I had made for My Niece And never even thought about the fact it was out of line to post it here. I will try to do better in the future to attempt keeping this great privilage alive for us all.I am sure that there is a lot of work that goes on behind the screen(so to speak) that we are not aware of and to those Folks thanks a BUNCH for giving us a chance to use this site as a place to grow as indidauls. Thats wordy enuff C-YALL Bob

In my opinion and I may get shot down at times too, fillet/boning knives are hunting cleaning blades.  No assault knives, swords, medieval weapons, etc.

I too love seeing different designs just remember the rules.  Also if your post gets moved or deleted...remember you are in good company  ;)  tippit

The main issue has been the excess amount of "fighting knives" of late. Camp knives, fillet, boning, skinners, etc are all in the hunting realm.

This sure is an easy bunch!  :D   On most forums, we'd already be in fuss.   :smileystooges:

But that's why I  like it around here.   :)  Lin

Also if I may add.  This forum is for the making and showing of crafted knives by Trad Gang Members ONLY!!! Lots of knife makers posting there wears but yet do not choose to become a sponsor of the site. Post pics of yours knives all you want. BUT if you are selling to people on here let's say under the table... well is that really right??? <><

Just don't take this forum away - I have a few other "Knife" only sites I check out from time to time and they do not compare to what I see and learn here(although I do see some of you out there too)  By the way - can we start a list of other knife sites/forums some of you like checking out?  I hit up the knife network now and then in the newbie section and Ray Rogers is a great help over there.

Thanks -

I think some of the "assault" knives shown lately came about from a post about good knife for going after a hog.  After thinking about that situation, an "assault" knife seemed to fit the bill pretty well.  It sure got me thinking about carrying a "different" type of knife than normal.  Of course I'm not planning on jumpin' a hog like some.
Just my thoughts on the subject.  I'll crawl back in my hole now.  :knothead:

What Frank says goes straight to the heart. If someone is doing that they will lose their posting privileges in the forum. Lets keep it for what is meant for. A place to learn about crafting knives for hunting and showing what folks make for their own use(excluding sponsors who can post hunting knives they sell, someone has to keep the lights on).

I think many will agree with me in saying that "self knives" are a very big part of traditional bowhunting.  I'm glad the forum is here, as well as it should be.
