First off I just have to say that Tippit is one heck of a guy. He made a gorgeous blade that he put a paracord handle on and sent to me to give to my brother for christmas through the trad gang santa, and he asked for absolutely nothing in return. Just an amazing act of kindness, and the blade was absolutely beautiful.
He also served as a little motivation for my dad to try his hand at making knives after seeing jeff's work, he's now made 4 or 5 i believe. My brother and I decided to jump into the fire as well and this is what came out of it from my end. There are plenty of things wrong with it, but for my first, I was pretty happy. Blade came from an old miter saw blade, and modeled after a buck drop point my dad had. Handle is laminated Oak and Pine (what we had in the garage)

sticshooters right, its all over ur hooked, i got my first one done after a year in process and now im looking to have 4 fillet knives done in a few months...now if i can talk my dad outta that wetgrinder he got at a farm sale

You are going the way of most beginning makers. Using found or reclaimed materials is the way most makers start out. It's a time honored tradition!
Use that thing as much as you can and figure out what you like and don't like about it. Then apply that to the next ones.
Learning the HOW to make a knife better is the easy part if you're patient. The real trick is how to make a knife DESIGN better.
Good luck and great start mast. With all the makers you have around you this should be fun to see how you progress. And if there is every anything we can do to help...just ask.
