Howdie gang,
Just thought I'd show off these three of mine again...and... well you know, we all like to look at a well made knife from time to time... :jumper: So I'll start:
Your turn now....
al
OK, I'll take the top one. No, the bottom one. Oh, maybe all three. Wow. Those are some beauties. What kind of wood/material are the handles made of?
It's called Black Palm. And it's cut on an angle to show the end grain of the timber. Oh and the top one is my son's, bottom 2 are mine.
Here is mine:

I expect my Big throwing knife from Daniel any day now and I'll "throw" that up for eye-ballin' when it arrives. :jumper:
Here is the one I'm using right now. I make my own and change now and again.

Well deer season is over so it's time to finish up some new hunting knives. Maybe a favorite in the bunch :) The large hunting blade at the bottom is my first try using some damascus steel...Doc

Very nice Jeff. Love that knife of yours Ray, Woody is an artist. Lots of great blades here.
So Ron, which knife ends up going to the field with you the most :banghead:
Joe
(http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c215/teqilamokinbird/knife002.jpg)
Here's another Woody knife. I think I need to keep this one in a locked display case :)

Jeff, those knifes by Woody are incredible, aren't they?
Great knifes guys. Ray, that is a work of art from Woody. I would be afraid of using it because I might break it.
Tippit, Did you make those blades? Love the shape of the first few in the second picture.
Snakewood those bottom two are gorgeous....what are the handle materials made of?
QuoteSo Ron, which knife ends up going to the field with you the most
My philosophy is, why carry only one knife when you can just as easily carry two or three. :goldtooth:
I am pretty sure thats Doug Campbell's fossilized mastadon handles
Hey Jeff you should lock that Woody knife up at my house, no one would expect that. lol
Arrowslinger...I did forge those blades (I'm a wantabe blacksmith)
Alex...Woody's work is museum quality!
Jeff Just sent you a PM. Thanks
beautiful stone, Jeff! The neat thing about Woody's knives is they are as functional as they are beautiful.
Here's my newest I purchased..a Herb Derr custom
(http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e322/rayhammond123/HerbDerrSkinner.jpg)
and I have one of these too..

Those are some mighty pretty blades Ray.
Here's a couple "Gentleman Bowies", not really hunting knives but could be used in a pinch.

Here's my collection so far. I just love a good knife. And like Ron I carry more than four in the field. I don't want to be under knifed. The collection is short one as I lost my very first knife I got when I was around 9 years old this year hunting and that was a green river. I'm going to miss that old friend. My recent blessings are the dagger on the bottom left end. Made by uhde here in Iowa. A nice personal additude adjuster. The third one from left on bottom was a gift from Adkmountainman a nice ML neck knife. The one on the far right bottom was made by Reviveourhome the rest on the bottom are Stickshooter knifes. The Bowie came from Walkingstick and the large butcher knife was an awesome find for me at a garage sale. It is my leg/boot knife. Most of the others above were gifts to me. (http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f29/mrviclisco/blades.jpg)
Nice Mr Vic
"And like Ron I carry more than four in the field. I don't want to be under knifed."
Vic, trust me, Ron will never be "under knifed"!
I can't say this is my hunting knife, yet, since I just finished it last week. But we are going to fix that - Trad Bowhunters of Georgia will be chasing piggies in the swamp one week from today - YAY! (http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j87/SOS_321/000_0018.jpg)

Ray...I resemble that remark! :biglaugh:
Ron :clapper:
Wile, those are some neat knives, man!
Ron, I think the prettiest knife I have ever seen is that big honking thing you have with the Wild Rose Creations beaded and quilled sheath...that is one awesome looking mountain man of a blade!
Mr. LaClair,
There seems to be a problem with that Helle you have there. That model must have a defect because it is no longer available. You may send it to me for proper disposal before you injure yourself with it.
No need to thank me. Many years ago my mother taught me to be the kind and selfless man I am.

Yep, I have got to take a pic of my "collection" some beauts, some just knives - some from very dear friends, and some that are old friends. Then I'll still do "Spike" when it arrives from the Frozen North.

over and under, that sheath and knife were NOT made by me...I don't have that kind of talent, friend.
That's a knife by Herb Derr...a master bladesmith.
Is this group of people about traditional archery, or knives?
Some of the knives shown are simply to pretty to bloody up! Outstanding!
Here's one I made to match the bow...osage racing stripe in walnut on damascus steel.

Whoa! Kingstaken, how does that work? Some demonstration pics if you could?! I'll post my knife tommorow.
This is the cover from the bow.

I have tried to shoot into my target. It mostly bounced off. I had to stop as I was afraid I might stab myself in the wrist as the arrow keeped on slipping off the surgical tubing just as with a sling shot.
It says Patend Pending, but I don't belive the guy had it jist right yet when I had purhcased this. Have taken the knife bear hunting to New Brunswick, Built in compass, emergency kit.
SOS,,,,,,,,ouch that hurt

A few of my Randalls

A few? You make me sick and very jealous Otto. lol
I forgot about this one-
(http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e322/rayhammond123/knife.jpg)
That last one looks familiar Ray. Chad
hey, it's in the "starring" role in my collection, Chad.
It's a beautiful piece!!! Everyone, Chad Holm made the knife, and -correction- Shell did the fantastic sheath for the one in the pic above.
I got it in the first St Judes auction.
My latest endevour.....

Kankaanpaa forged Carbon steel (W2) blade, brass & cowshorn bolster, Spalted Golden Sycamore handle. Just need to knock up a sheath for it.
Ruana Drop Point Skinner. After 20 years this is still my favorite knife...

Ray, Stickshooter's wife, Shell made the shealth. Chad
Rob your knives just keep getting better. Chad that one Ray got from you looks like a heck of a good skinner.
A few more. Some of these are BlackJack knives made in Effingham Ill. and the rest are Randalls.
I hate cheap knives.
Look at all those Randalls!!!
Otto is the man
Lots of pretty knives, it's always good to be overprepared than in need.
This is my latest one...
Not as big as yours, but very helpful :)
(http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f77/amboyna/9549405d.jpg) (http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f77/amboyna/knife3.jpg) forged from 5160 and differntially heat treated 3 times to 57-58 hardness by Georgia journemansmith John Parks.
I found amboyna burl while turning for another project, sketched a profile(I wanted a knife to be as balanced as possible while held upside down for skinning elk on steep slopes) and he did the rest.
Maxim...interesting little knife. Is that a locally made knife. Looks like it could be very useful for after the shot work.
ChuckC
Charles, it's made by me with great help of my friend (he is a master-knifemaker).
Well OTTO some people may not have the big coin to pay for a randall. So some have to get by with a less costly knife.Gotta make due with what ya can afford. BTW ya do have some awesome knives.<><
Wow...Ray...that first stone blade knife you have posted is the nicest knife I have ever seen. a four figure knife for sure...I'd like a poster of that for my house. I hope you display it at home
That would be a great trout knife Maxim. I really like it.
And Otto I thought I was jealous before. LOL
I'm trying to photo and post a new pic. Just having a little practice at thttp://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f77/amboyna/100_0803.jpghis...

Sticshooter
Sorry for the confucsion I may have caused...
I hate CHEAP knives. That's different from INEXPENSIVE!!!! And there's nothing wrong with a good inexpensive knife. Perfect example...There's a lot of deer been dressed with $29.95 Buck 110's.
this is my new favourite knife; I have wanted a Grohmann #1 for years. I was presented with it after the deerhunt that I hosted in Oct.
I have yet to dress some game with it but I love the simple lines, intuitive design and the way it balances in my hand.
A real nice knife and not hard to look at either! (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v611/ashstyk/ash/Original.jpg) BD
being made here in Canada since 1957 doesn't hurt either!

Ooooh. I really like that Mattson blade, Stag. Lovely handle shape & finish.
That's it. I'm going down the workshop again! (Actually I need to, to finish a skinner for Dave N! Sorry for the delay Dave!)
The top one is the knife I currently carry in the woods. The others are gifts for friends and family that I've recently finished.

Here's mine.

OK, enlighten me....what's the big deal with "Randalls"
You guys have some beautiful knives!!!
QuoteOriginally posted by Guru:
OK, enlighten me....what's the big deal with "Randalls"
Lets see...
Long history ("fighting knives" of WWII)
Handmade
You can pick many features, custom knife
High Quality
Expensive (although not too bad)
Limited quantity available (Randall will not sacrifice handmade methods or quality)
Long waiting list (5 years)
Due to above, the moment your knife arrives you can sell it for double on ebay. There are a few distributors that have a ready, yet limited, supply of brand new Randall's but they too are priced about double the Randall catalog price.
Result:
The mystique continues....
Many of them never get used as knives but simply sit in collections
WILD RUSSIAN : I like that blade ! How well does it work ? I have a tail zipper like that , and it works great . I would think that little buger might work good . Maybe a 2nd finger ring , and a little longer blade ? >>>------------->RIVERWOLF
Here is one I am getting ready to buy, a real beauty.

Here is one I made last year for hunting...
But my wife took it away for kitchen :(
(http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i294/WildRussian/PICT0826res.jpg)
I have a question to wood gurus...
What kind of wood the handle made? :)
Okay I`ll guess, Bog Oak?
Bue--.
Bue,
you're winner :)
yes, after tens or maybe hundreds years at the bottom :)
You have nice taste, Danny. Who made that?
Randall knives are real beauties, for sure. I have one (a model 5, 4") that I have used. Many people would cringe at the mention of Using a Randall, but isnt that what they are made for?
When it all comes down to use, I just dont think you can beat a knife made by Bob Dozier. His heat treatment gets the most from the D2 steel. His designs are no nonsense, using tools, but can be "prettied up" with some of the more exotic handle scales.
Another maker I have a knife from is Steve Skiff from Ney York. He is fairly new on the scene but his work is outstanding. Here is the one I have. ATS-34 blade with a triple dyed, stabilized Buckeye Burl handle. Nickle Silver guard.
BP
Third Eye, I like the look of the first knife especially. What kind of burl is the handle?
Guru, Bo Randall of Orlando, resurected the custom knife business in a period when mass production had dominated. If memory serves, he was inspired by a Scagel model and went from there. Has a big military following and celebrity fanbase, and the mystique (and wait time)grows.
Brian P,
Your sense of taste when it comes to knives is tremendous. I would imagine your collection is enviable to say the least!!!
The finish work on that Skiff knife, as well as the unreal sheath truly makes it a piece of art as well as a fine tool.
I imagine the weather altered your initial plans for the weekend, eh? I just drove through sleet for 5 hours getting home from a business trip north of me.
Ray,
Actually, illness changed the plans. Not me, but the guy that has the key to the hunting cabin LOL.
Yea, I got some nice knives, but a couple I just cant bring myself to use. The Derr and Skiff being two of em. I love fine knives, but I hate things I dont use too. Such is my dilema. The sheath on the Skiff knife is made by Treestump leathers. Skiff has them made for each knife (or did) and is as fine as the knife.
I plan to get things out to you tomorrow. Got your MO.
BP
Brian,
That is a Bob Dodd creation.
Danny
Wow .... I cant believe the knives some of you people have thay are un real.... I hope youre not trying to get me hooked on something else!!
great job on these knives
Here are some of my other knives.

Top is an custom AC Metsala Damascus Bowie, then an RW Clark custom hunter, then a Doug Campbell damascus, then a John Sevey custom, then a David Brozdiak custom and finally a tippet caper that I love.
Danny
Kerry,
Sorry its taken awhile to get back here. The knife you asked about is actually a highly figured birdseye maple.
ttt
Brian P,
Sorry you missed out on hunting in that way...hopefully you have a little more season left???
Everyone else- beautiful knives all.
This is my favorite working knife of a rather large collection. It has been a lifelong dream to own a Randall, and my wife had this one made for me. This is my Randall Model 3 with Burl Maple handle. This knife was blooded on a 340 class 6 point elk in September...

Was able to use my Randall Model 3 circa 1978 on a 7 pt Florida whitetail yesterday evening which was the final evening of season. Fell to my Silvertip " procrastinator" . Oops silvertip is a different thread.
All of my Randalls get used as soon as I get them. They don't seem to lose value if used. Don't have many , just 4 with one on order.
Dad gave me the 1st one when I was 17 on Christmas 78.
Randall ain't anything magical to use. A good Buck or Gerber cuts and sharpens as well, maybe better. It's more of a feel ,or how it's balanced that sets them apart for me. But mostly it's the fact that it's a Randall. Wish I could post my pics but I'm technically impaired.

isn't that armguard a pretty little bugger!!!!!
NDTerminator
Not to be picky, but the pic of the knife you have is not a Randall Model 3. It's a model 8, or more commonly known as a Bird & Trout with a Maple Burl handle. That knife was made on a special run for AG Russell, a rather well known knife shop. Do a search for AG Russell knives. Go to the Randall section and you'll see that knife. A model 3 has a bit of an upswept tip and does not have the top edge sharpened as does the model 8. Go to my post on page 6. Right hand column, 2nd knife from the top. THAT'S a model 3.
Jock I can pm you my address if'n ya wanna send me that Campbell bear claw BOLO!LOL<><
Made last week.......this one may get donated to the Primitive Archer benefit northern bow package that is currently being worked on.

Purplish Edwards Plateau chert with a shed deer antler handle and rawhide wrap.
Matt
sweet flaking, Matt. That's some pretty looking stone. Is Edwards Plateau near you, or did you trade for the rock? Sorry for my ignorance.
Edwards comes from Texas and is probably the most common knappable stone in the state blessed with the most knappable stone! Usually it is sorta tan to carmel colored, but sometimes one gets a nice piece of purple like this one.......doesn't show up real well in the pic though.
Matt
I have another Woody Blackwell knife that is made of Imperial Jasper from Mexico. If you hold the knife up to the sun you can see through the outer edges of the stone. Its brilliant green.
The knife up in the front of this thread, made of Knife River flint has pieces of fern and other living material trapped inside the stone which you can clearly see- the knife is translucent when held up to a light source.
It is the sharpest thing I have ever touched to flesh, I can tell you that!
Welllll sometimes I can not coose just one.LOL
