Title: Riding mowwer blades.

Hay all have a question for you

 Have a supply of riding lawn mowwer blades. Was wondering if these will make a good knife or not.

 The only thing I see wrong with them is they are a bit on the thin side.

Thin?  What kind of Mower are you riding?  I have made some damascus using mower blade steel and band saw blades.  Oh, yr you can make a knife with them.  A darn good one.

they cant be that thin? i mean you couldnt make a hatchet out of one but the majority of the steel i use is 1/8 and i think mower blades are somewhere around there?

These are all knives I made using Mower blades. Some of them are almost 1/4", not too thin at all.

hey lewis do you temper those mower blades? and what do you use to cut them out

Yeah I usually anneal the whole mower blade then cut the knife blank out, Grind do my filework. Then I would Heat treat it and temper.

Thanks for the comments guys. After making these I realize I am NO knife maker. It was fun while it lasted but it got old REAL quick. A knife maker surely has to have a passion for the work, there is alot of work to making a knife. Too much detail sanding and such for my lack of patience. LOL

Lewis,  They do look nice.  How hard do they get when you quench them?  Will a file skate off the edge?  Do they hold a sharp edge?   I am surprised they are that high in carbon content...Doc
