I'm a reader - what/which is a good reference book on Knife building, folks?
ttt
Hi Bernie, I picked up this BOOK (http://www.anvilfire.com/bookrev/goddard/review.htm) about a year ago and it helps ya understand alot of what you need to know to get going making knives along with using what you have on hand.

Thanks for the link to the thorough review, Montauks. I'd seen his books listed, but not sure if I need to get into more than "assembly" of knifes yet. Sure looks interesting though. We'll see - :D
Bernie, one of the most valuable book I have ever read on knifemaking is " How to make knives " by Richard W. Barnes and Robert Loveless.
Once you start reading the very simple step by step process of how to make a knife with machinery and also by hand grinding with files, you'll find yourself be propelled in another world. I give one of these book to the students that go through my knife classes and they all say the same thing " That's such a down to earth book and easy to follow ".
But since you've posted the book tread, I think I'll give one of these valuable pieces of knowledge away here.
Daniel
I just received 5 days ago both books (E-Bay). I have read 50 pages of the $50 workshop book and I get the impression he thinks I know something about the art of making knifes, which I do not.I will give the other some reading the next couple of days. The loveless book is recommended by Blade magazine for beginners. Perhaps the other may be also recommended. I being hardheaded (re:dumb?) had to go the easier route and ordered myself the video by Ed Caffery MBS.
Butts, Ed Caffery's Basic Bladesmithing is a real good start on forging. It will give you a great foundation into the process of forging. Then it will allow you to understand what you are reading.
I tend to be a much better visual learner. There are a number of very good DVD's out there...Doc
I like videos too, Doc but even with them I still like books for going back to. Daniel's and Blade's recomendations on "How To Make Knives" sounds good for my cup of tea. (Guess I'll wait and see if I can get supper lucky and win Daniels draw thread first  :biglaugh: ) I think I noticed that Jantz had lower prices on their book offerings than other knife sites FWIW.
Thanks for the replies, to all.
