Title: 1st annual Adirondack attack!(the secound wave)
Post by: adkmountainken on September 19, 2006, 06:59:00 AM
well i have had many replys and have some fellow Tradgamg members set for different dates. so far
Sept 30Th:
Adirondackman
Drewsbow
3Dmuzzy & Aram
Oct 7&8th:
Huntrdfk
JCsnapshot
alos looking to set a date for Woodchucker to come up as well as Alex Bugnon.
this will be all new to me as i have not had the chance to hunt with a fewllo traditioal archer and i'm looking foward to it. i will be hanging a couple more stands this weekend.
Things you might want to bring.:
pop up blind if you have one and would like to use it. my treestands are on the small side but are brand new. i use the strap on climbing ladders for steps.
Fly rod or other rod if we have spare time as there is a great creek that holds trout and bass right where i hunt.
Turkey call if you are staying to hunt Oct 1st. ther are A LOT of turkey onthe ridge we will be huntig. also many coyote which opens Oct 1.
for those that choose to stay the 30th through the Oct 1st there is room at my mothers house where i will be staying too. we can supply the food there, no problem.
If you have a 2 way radio please bring it, i have a couple. i don't like using these a lot but with people not knowing the area it is a good idea.
There is a KAZILLION black and grey squrriels on this ridge as well, bring extra arrows!
i guess thats about it. i have been scouting a lot nd i feel very confident someone will get a shot a deer. this land is all state land so there will be no problems with land owners. i am by no means a guide and never will be. i have lived and hunted this same area for 36 years so i know it pretty well. i'm setting this up as i would love to meet some fellow tradgangers and learn whatever i can from them. i will be calling everyone this weekend.
Hope someone has a good gutting knife!!!!!
   Ken

Remember that anyone hunting before Oct 1st will need last years license and tags.  From Oct 1st on you need this years tags.  I never liked the way the season year splits in the NZ.

Nice thing you're doing there Ken.  Don't forget to leave a spot open for hunting down in the SZ in Nov.

as keith pointed out if you are hunting Sept 30th you must have last years tag. you can take buck or doe. if you are lucky enough to get one on the 30th you use last years tag. Oct 1st you will use this years archery tag for either buck or doe. it is up to you to take buck or doe. i am looking to take my first deer with longbow so any adult deer will be a trpphy to me. this area however does produce some huge, heavy racked bucks. i have saw many and taken a few.
If anyone has a 3d target they could bring that would be great.
The are on the d.e.c map is 5j.

Ken , sounds like a great hunt in the north woods !  I was in your neck  of the woods last weekend and what a great place! Unfortunately it was for my uncle's funeral. They live in Hamilton co. near Lake Pleasant and what little time I had to look around the woods looked positive . Lots of deer sign, moose and bear tracks , and the turkeys are like ants they are every where.I don't know how close you are to Lake Pleasant , but maybe a hunt or even a get together maybe in the future.
Good luck on your Adirondack attack...Bill

just got back in from trying to hang another stand, couldn't get it secure as the wind was STRONG!!! probley have to put a pop up blind in that spot for the morning then readjust the stand with possibly climbing sticks. sign everywhere, someone will definitly get a shot at a deer on this hunt! i will be starting to call everyone tonight and throught the week to get together on directions and times. would really like toget everyone in to their stands by 6am if possibly. thereal challange will be getting everyone here on time in the morning!!! can't wait, i'm pumped!!!!!

i think the only thing that will stop us is bad weather, the deer are definitly there. this is a mountain i hunt often and it is really good when there is a heavy beech/acorn mast. well let me tell ya i have NEVER saw as many beech as there are on the ground right now! acorns are heavy but the beech is unbelieavble! i look very foward to this.

Lets get this thread rollin' for Kenny!!!!!

What kind of gear are you guys bringing?????

I'm bringing my Mikuta longbow 53# @ 28" with a 5 arrow Selway Soft-Kote bowquiver attached.

For arrows I will be shooting my "Spirit Arrows",these belonged to my nextdoor nieghbor Lew,who made the journey Sept.7th. They are Easton "Autumn Orange" XX75s. They have been crown dipped, crested, and re-fletched by my VERY good friend Joe Skipp. They will be tipped with Lew's old green Bear Razorheads (which are still brand new BTW) I will also be bringing my backquiver full of "Fun Arrows" LOL.

Add to this my old Buck 110 lock-back knife that my lovely wife Lisa gave to me our first Christmas together 19 years ago,and my Lucky old Red&Black plaid hunting hat.

That's about it for me!!!!! What are you guys bringing?????

You should have a copy of this in your booklet.Notice the "exception" for the regular tags where it says antlered/antlerless....Not sure why it would take DEC very long to say it's good. What about your bow/muzzle antlerless permit. It comes with a supersportsmen and those are the 2 tags I have for this weekend.....Good luck!!

Ken, John and Drew are the kind of people you meet at 4;30 am in a parking lot, hours away from home and make instant friends. (...funny things this site does for bringing people together...) We talked, sipped the warm coffee and reminded ourselves to be grateful for the first real chilly morning (real good for deer movement but not so good for the ambushing hunter who has forgotten to pack his wool under layers  :(       )
For a couple of weeks now I was remembering the smells, the colors, the sounds  and the chill in the air: the hunting season was near.
But the season had not started yet. It had not until Ken dropped me off at my spot, watching the trees starting to take shape against the sky, listening to the owl hoot and the coyote yelp close by. It hit me so strong I took out my camera and tried hard to steady it on my knee so I could get a half- clear picture in the darkness.
For those who are so lucky to have experienced it no blurry pictures or words are needed... This is My picture of it:

The Dawn of Another Hunting Season
Thank you Ken for putting this together. It was like a festive launch of the hunting season. I know I can't chase whitetails where I live, not for another two weeks, but that doesn't change the way I feel. Others have said it before: hunting doesn't have to end with meat on the table (though I don't mind it when it does.) Hunting is a way of being attuned to the surroundings. Because of your offer my hunting season is two weeks longer (and the DEC can do nothing about it   :readit:      :p   )

To be continued....

I was sooo tired last night. You made it home OK? It was great riding with you.
Thank you again my friend,

... continued
We spent the midday shooting arrows and opening gifts        If Ken was going to have Xmas early, Drew was Santa Claus.  You should see what he brought... not a sac but a truck full..         : staves, treestands, ladders, knives, books, arrows, etc... Drew, I am blown away, humbled,
In the evening, after a few more cold, wet hours in the woods (the hunter's lot ) Ken's mother was the star.
You know that feeling: coming from the cold, dark, drizzly wet outdoors into a hospitable, bright home, sitting down to a  warm delicious meal?
Here she is with Drew, Ken, and Ed:

As we left, her last worry was whether we knew our way back to her house, should we ever want to come hunt again.... Speechless again!     :notworthy:
Ken do thank your mom again for me... It was a grand finale to an awesome day.
Aram

glad to hear you all had a good time. As we all know it is not all about taking a big buck or doe. It is about archery and the fine people you meet in life. Maybe next time out that buck of your dreams will walk by. I spent the weekend in the bow shop with last minute hunters who just need arrows or a new bow for the opening on Oct 14 down state NY. I did get a chance to shoot about two hours over the weekend at 10 yards in the shop. In between making arrows or putting a new WB rest assm on a compound bow. Also sold some of the new fiber optic sights on compounds this weekend. JUst for info I got 3 new bows in from Alpine archery impact XT compounds at 3.1 lbs with nothing on them, that over 2.5 lbs less in weight than when I was shooting my old Jennings compound. They sure have made great strides in performance. But I think we also see that in just the longbow and recurves that we all shoot. MY first ben person fiberglass was 60 lbs and to put it togethers you put one halk of the bow into the handle, then threw if over your leg to get it strung. I think it was several years till my Dad and I knw about a nocking point and we did glue leathers as a rest on the bow. A doz arrows from Herters was $12.65 for there new tan fiberglass arrows with 5 inch feathers. That old Herters catalog was in the bathroom and the highlight each spring was when the new catalog would come in....

That's still got to be 3 pounds more than Drew's Turk.    :scared:
I also got to try first hand the art and craft of Mark Baker and Eric Krewson. Two beautiful osage selfbows that Ken owns. Awsome work...     . Having built a few wood bows myself I can only aspire...   :notworthy:
Thanks all, and good luck to the guys going up next weekend,
You will love it,

What a great weekend. Ken is a wonderful host. If any of you guys are thinking about a possible trip, stop thinking and make plans. You'll have a wonderful time for sure.

Chuck, Thanks for the "situpon" being a ground hunter that will sure come in handy. It was great seeing you again. I'll share a campfire with you anytime.

Drewsbows, Thank you for the goodies you left there for Kens guests this year that was very generous. My son will love the arrows, and I was hoping to put the knife to use this weekend. Oh well, the Southern Zone archery opens next weekend. Maybe then????????

Ken, again Thank you for having me/ us this weekend, It was an awesome time sharing the woods with fellow Trad Gangers..............

Pics and more about the weekend tomorrow after work   :(   need to unpack and get some sleep.

Aram,
i'm allready thinking about next year, this year everything was put together rather quickly and i really didn't have it planned out as well as i would have liked. i will definitly makeit a yearly event and would love to hunt with you again as well as pick your brain on bow building and other crafts. i think next year i want to have 10-15 stands up and spaced out aways apart. would also like to do some drives to get the deer moving as they donot move to well this time of year. also thinking i would like to have a big fire pit to sit around later at night and get to talk more than we did. any ideas on improvments would be greatly apperiated. Did you start a bow for your wife yet?

Well!!!!! I had a GREAT TIME!!!!!!!!!! I couldn't have been happier!!!!! I was hunting with 2 good friends,in the beautiful Adirondack Mountains..... If I had to use one word to descibe it,that word would be..... "Perfect".

Joe Skipp had told Ken that this was a very generous offer...To which Ken stated that he had an ulterior motive,He wanted to get some guys up there to look over his set-ups,and his hunting area and to "Pick thier brains" about what they thought.

Well,Let me tell ya.....

THE MAN KNOWS WHAT HE'S DOING!!!!! His hunting area is first class!!!!! It has a healthy and plentiful deer (and other game) population. You can tell that Ken's trapping experiance has taught him to pay great attention to detail. His set-ups are about as perfect as you can get!!!!! ALSO...although they were taken with a gun (and BTW alot of us do still gun hunt) Ken has already killed bigger bucks than many of us will ever see and most of us can only dream about.

I had met Ken and Jim before at the Tollgate Traditions shoot and they are just 2 of the GREATEST guys that you could ever meet!!!!! We met at the Dunkin' Donuts at 5am saturday morning and we had coffee and conversation with Ken explaining a basic itinerary for the weekend. Then we drove to the trailhead and "geared-up" for the morning hunt. We decided to put Jim on a stand low on the mountainside and Ken asked me if I wanted to hunt "low or high". Well, I'm an old mountain hunter and I may be a little fat and out of shape but I told Ken "I'm goin' to the top" LOL. We dropped Jim off at his stand and Ken and I proceeded to climb to the top. When we got on top Ken put me in a stand of Hemlocks with a few White Oaks and a Hickory and a Beech or two. Ken told me that it was a good deer area and that he had seen quite a few Black Squirrels there. The early morning was beautiful!!!!! The cool crisp mountain air just made me feel ALIVE!!!!! And then.....There he was.....moving quickly across the forest floor.....A BLACK SQUIRREL!!!!! I dropped my broadhead arrow on the ground and I grabbed and nocked my judo tipped arrow..... I picked an opening for him to pass through and then I would get my shot!!!!! I waited,AND WAITED.....(where the heck did he go?????) He must have scamperd up and into a den tree LOL. Oh Well..... He made my weekend!!!!!

More later.....

Chucks enthusiam is something to behold, just pumps ya up being around him!!   "[heman]"   also plan on making a hunt with JC later this year too, see that i found another southern place to hunt!!   ;)

Well..... After saturday mornings hunt we drove to Johnstown and had a good lunch, then we drove to the Adirondack Sport Shop (?????) to see up close the Big Buck that Ken killed when he was 16 years old. WOW!!!!!!!!!! You honestly have to see this rack to believe the size of it!!!!! I'll bet if you put 2 bushel baskets side by side they would fit inside this rack!!!!! Then we drove back to Ken's mother's house for some Stumpin' Fun!!!!!  :archer:    :archer:    :archer:

After about an hours worth of stump shootin' it was time to get ready for the evening hunt. We started up the mountain and we decided to set Jim in about the same place that he set in the morning being as he had seen 4 turkeys there in the morning and it just felt "good" to him. Ken said that he would put me about 3/4 of the way up the mountain in a "real good spot",then he would go down below me to one of his tree stands. Well folks,I'll tell you this, when Kenny says he's gonna put you in a "real good spot" HE ISN'T KIDDING!!!!! We walked down an overgrown log road to a big rock ledge with what looked like a small ditch in front of it.As is turned out that "ditch" was a deer trail!!!!! It was worn into the ground about a foot deep and I bet the deer have been using that trail since back when my Mohawk ancestors were hunting that mountain. As we were looking the spot over Ken said that it was a reall good spot, but he was conserned that I couldn't see very far. I told him THAT was NOT even a concern of mine seeing as any deer that came down that trail would be between 10 and 20 yards away when I could see it!!!!! The evening hunt was very enjoyable. I saw alot of chipmunks that kept me entertained including one that kept coming over and climbing up on my boot. I did see 2 gray squirrels (no blacks  :(  ) but I was not able to get a clean shot at either one of them. About an hour before dark a big flock of turkeys came up the mountain behind me an started flying up into the Hemlocks to roost for the night.I could not see them clearly as they were up the mountain from me and through the trees, but all of the yelping and cackling made it sound like it was a REALLY BIG FLOCK!!!!! Things were getting quiet and it was just about dark when I decided to call it a day.I had just finished packing up my gear for the hike out when I had a "nature call" (boy was THAT a bad idea LOL) The sound of water hitting the leaves just made this deer above me that I couldn't see come UN-GLUED!!!!! It started snorting and blowing up a storm!!!!! It must have blowed 20 times!!!!!!!!!!

Gotta go!!!!!, Be back later LOL

OK.....I start to pick my way out to the logroad, all of the time I'm kicking myself for having my grunt call packed away in my fanny pack instead of out where I could get at it.(I'm not a big fan of grunt calls but I figured What could it hurt????? The deer was already spooked LOL) As I head down the mountain I meet up with Ken and he says "Listen,The coyotes are starting to howl,They are down by where Jim is sitting" Ken and I head on down the logroad and we meet up with Jim who is now standing up on the logroad. When we got to him Jim said,"Those coyotes were howling all around me!!!!! It sure does give you an eerie feeling when your all alone!!!!!" Ken's quick reply was....."That's one of the reasons for carrying BIG knives" Ya just gotta love a Mountain Man
  After dinner I hit the rack early (I didn't even get undressed and I think I fell asleep the minute I hit the cot LOL)

Tommorrow was going to be another BIG day.....

Sunday morning Ken woke us up to a delicious breakfast of scrambled eggs, sausage, toast, and coffee!!!!! We headed out to the trucks to load our gear and head for the mountain. At the trailhead we had a brief pow-wow about who was going to sit where. It was almost a given that Jim was going to sit in "his" spot,(because he had seen turkeys EVERY time he had sat there!!!!!) Ken asked me if I wanted to sit where I did sat. evening or if I wanted to go to the top of the mountain. I told him I was going to the top (aka Black Squirrel Heaven) for one more chance at bagging a black squirrel. Ken told us that he was going to sit in his tree stand at the top of the mountain.

We dropped Jim of at "his" spot and we wished him "Good Luck" then Ken and I contiued on up the mountain. When we got to the top ken dropped me off at Black Squirrel Heaven (I like that name LOL)and headed for his tree stand. As I was sitting there enjoying the sights, smells, and sounds of morning,I couldn't help but think about how lucky we are as Hunters,to be able to become a part of nature and experiance it firsthand.I was thinking about my nieghbor and good friend Lew who "made the journey" last month. I was carrying his "Spirit Arrows" and I was wearing his old (1958) hunting button on my Lucky Huntin' Hat. I truely felt that his spirit was with me that morning. Then a sound snapped me out of my daydream,A fat gray squirrel was scurrying through the leaves and then he jumped up on a dead log and there he stopped...I dropped my broadhead arrow...he sat up and twitched his tail...I pulled my Judo tipped arrow from my bowquiver...he barked at me...I drew my arrow back,my index finger touched the corner of my mouth,I picked my spot right on the end of his nose.....and I let it down LOL. As I looked at this SADISTIC little squirrel I SWEAR I saw him smile at me   :p   as I looked behind him I saw nothing but AIR!!!!! He was sitting on a dead log,on the edge of a stone ledge, with NOTHING but AIR behind him!!!!!   :banghead:   He continued to sit there and taunt me almost saying "Go ahead and shoot dummy,You know your gonna miss!!!!!and then your arrow will fly off into "Who knows WHERE it will land" and you will NEVER FIND IT!!!!!   "[tunglaff]"   This squirrel did NOT go away for a LONG TIME!!!!! I did see another gray squirrel that morning that wouldn't give me a clear shot.I also saw two Black Squirrels that were running and I could not get a shot at either one of them     ALSO I saw a Ruffed Grouse who in tippical Ol'Ruff fashion paraded around without a care untill I drew a bead on him with my Judo and THEN he exploded into the air..... (be back later)

Ken came and got me at about 11am. He told me that he had seen a deer but could not get a shot at it. I told him what I had seen and then we headed down the mountain to pick up Jim.When we got there Jim told us that he had seen.....you guessed it!!!!! TURKEYS!!!!!

We headed down the mountain and then down the road to Ken's mother's house. We decided to go stumpin' for a couple hours before lunch. We shot, and laughed, and took a few pictures. Then we packed up our gear and down the road to get lunch. After a hearty lunch we said our "see you agains" and our Adirondack weekend had come to an end. It truely was..... "PERFECT"

Ken, Many Thanks My Brother!!!!!  :campfire:
