I am so happy that this site has appeared. I have been shooting film cameras for years and I am very slow at getting into digital. I am looking for a digital that I can "add too" later. Trying to keep it in a price range of a thousand or less. I have looked at the Konica-Minolta 5D and the Cannon Rebel XT with 18-55mm. I am looking for any and all suggestions/help/advice for a SLR model in this price range. Thanks in advance.
I would also look at Olympus, they make a very nice digital SLR.
The Canon Rebel XT (D350) is a wonderful camera in a fairly small package. I bought one as a backup to my 20D, but used it a lot in Yellowstone last Fall. I kept my buddy's 500mm IS attached to it and used my 20D for any other lenses I wanted to use. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the XT. However, I would pay the extra for the 17-85mm IS as the 18-55mm is so-so at best.
I'd shy away from the K-M, if I'm not mistaken, the recently announced closing up shop.
Thanks for the information. Sorry for the time difference in replying but my nights and days are all different. I was just looking at the minolta 5D body with a 18-200 mm lens. I will check the closing of shop. I do like the cannons but they are a little pricey for my budget at this time. Does anyone now anything about Pentax?
Another question. What Web site or Who has the best selections at the best prices?
Here is a link to Konica- Minolta getting out of the camera business (http://www.dpreview.com/news/0601/06011901konicaminoltaout.asp) Reviews of the Pentax ist have been pretty good from what I have read. People that have them at Photography forums that I visit seem very happy with them.

Thanks for this information. I will try to look in the direction of the Rebel by Cannon. Maybe I can find a good package deal somewhere on the internet. I reallyonce again appreciate all of your advice/help.
