Gentlemen,
I recently purchased a Shakespeare X-30 Super Necedah and I would like a bit of information from those of you who collect these bows and know their history.
As stated, I have a Super Necedah, serial number D 94510 S, 54", 60# draw. The bow is made of zebrawood with black glass backings. Specifically, I would like to know the approximate manufacture date of the bow and also how common, or uncommon, a 60# draw weight is for these bows?
This is the first Shakespeare recurve I have ever owned. I recently, as of February 2012, began shooting and collecting recurve bows. I currently own 3 Bear recurves, one Shakespeare Model 600 longbow, and this newly acquired Super Necedah.
Lastly, how would you rate the smoothness and shooting characteristics of the Super Necedah as compared to Bear recurves?

The super necedah was made from 1968 to 73.thats the best you can date them,as far as witch is smoother bear or shakespeare ill let you be the judge.
I'm sure Mike Shaw will comment on this...he has a nice collection of quality bows, but this bow is his current hunter......he loves it....you listening out there Mike????
I appreciate the comments thusfar. I am currently awaiting a new string to be made for this bow then I will be able to shoot it. I hope that it draws and shoots as well or better than the Bears.
I have been watching bows up for auction on **** and this is the first and only 60# Shakespeare I had seen. Were many of them made in 60# class? It seems most are 40-50# draw.
One more thing...
There is no Shakespeare Archery circular roundelle emblem on the side of the riser. Is that common or is that an indication that the bow may have been refinished at some time in the past?
60# pound I would say is rare.most are 40 to 50#.mine is missing the emblem also.
Andrew: You will be very happy with the Super Necedah. I have a 45#er and am shooting 1916 Aluminums out of it. Shoots as good as any of my Bears.
I'm looking forward to shooting the Super Necedah. I have been shooting carbon shafts with my Bear Grizzly, which is an actual 53# measured draw at 28", and I am re-fletching some aluminum shafts that are rated for 50-65 pound bows. So these new arrows ought to work well with the Super Necedah.
I thought the 60# draw weight for the Super Necedah was a bit uncommon and I feel like I got a good bargain at $86.00 especially since it is such a highly figured zebrawood.

Is there anything special I need to know or lookout for regarding the Shakespeare bows?
The aluminum shafts I am making up are 2117's / 29" long.

The circular emblem was just a foil stick on. I'm sure a lot of them have fallen off over the years. If you look close opposite side of the shelf you may see some discoloration where it may have once been.
I have the exact bow, but at 50#, its a nice bow.
I honestly cannot tell the difference in performance between different makers, they all shoot well for me.

Like I said, I am new to traditional archery, but ia am really enjoying shooting the recurves. I love the way the Bear bows shoot and the size of their grips. One of my brothers has a Ben Pearson Hunter, 55#, that I have shot some and it too shoots really well. However, I find the grip on the Pearson to be a bit too large for my taste. The Shakespeare bow has a grip that fits my hand quite well and I'm hoping that it will feel and shoot as good as the Bears and Ben Pearson. I think it will.
