Title: Grandpa's old Bingham
Post by: DamionS on January 27, 2011, 11:20:00 AM
My Dad gave this to me recently. My Grandpa made it sometime back in the 70's probably, nobody remembers exactly when, may have been earlier. I'm not sure when this style kit was first introduced by Bingham... I was just in there yesterday to get a string for it, but forgot to ask.
It was Grandpa's main hunting bow, and he took exceptional care of it. Other than a couple very minor spots, which are almost certainly due to improper storage since his passing, it's nearly as nice as the day he finished it. It's a 62" model but I don't know exactly what the lb. is yet, other than to say it's HEAVY... heavier than any other I've pulled.
That is also his old Bear quiver. The leather needs a bit of reconditioning but it's still very nice considering how many hunts it saw.

My Mom remembers him always out in the shed with his "big contraptions", making his own arrows and working on his bows. Too bad I was so young that I have almost no recollection of any of it.

Anyway, just thought I'd share it with all of you.

Beautiful.  Someone had mentioned the blanks were Damon Howatt Hunters.  At least it looks identical to a Hunter.

I have alot of Bighams around here but none look like that. That one looks like a Howatt. If that is a Bingham it is a beautiful piece of work by your Grand dad.

Wow...I'm dazzled!  I finished a Bingham recurve way back then....to think it could have looked like that!(I think I GAVE mine away!!)  I've looked at your pics several times, just because!  As the others said, this is a rare opportunity you have to honor your grandfather, his good taste, and his ability. You have a fine heritage.  Excuse me, I'm gonna go look at those pics again!

What a beautiful bow!  It definately shows the Damon Howatt influences and I consider those to be some of the finest looking bows of the time.  Your grandfather was a very talented man, and you are very lucky to end up with his bow.  What a treasure!
