I have 2 bows being refinished at this time that I would like to give away for free, no charge. I have over $1,000 already invested in these bows. The first is a '59 Kodiak Maple sight window 60 incher that is a wall hanger only, it had a split upper limb, unrepairable. The second bow is a Saxon Kadiak, 60" 55# r/h, a real nail driver. It has had the Saxon coin replaced with an original Bear copper coin and Bear water transfer decals. I had provided replacement Bear decals from Al H. but they were destroyed last November. I was told today that the bows would be now possibly refinished and ready for delivery by the end of March. If anyone wants either of these bows you can have them. Send me a pm and I will get you in touch with the refinisher. You will have to pay him for the shipping from his shop to your home. I will pay for the refinishing bill myself because the refinisher accepted the work from me and I will honor my agreement with him, my word is good and I consider myself a man of integrity. Due to personal considerations, I have no desire to ever see either bow again. I hope someone else can make good use of them. I have plenty of other bows. The Saxon is a great shooting recurve and the Kodiak would be a fantastic display piece. I'm sure the bows will look stunning when they are done as the refinisher is a very busy professional. Thanks and enjoy.
I woud. ???
The Saxon.

Third in line please. I never will be able to afford one so thank you ! PM to you
Way to go Chuck! You are a class act all the way! :archer:
Wow, I just got home from work and was surprised to see the response already. I guess the only fair way to do this now would be to draw names from hats. I'll put your name in for which ever bow you want and draw the winner's names this Friday evening. Fair enough? Thanks again. Here is the only pic I have of the Kadiak, it is a reproduction of the '59 Kodiak Maple site window, a very cool bow. It is the bow at the top of the rack, not the bow on the shelf above it. Thanks again.

Over the years I have owned a few archery collectibles that I felt about something like your statement... "I have no desire to ever see either bow again".
After the items were gone from my possession, it always made me feel much better not to have them around to look at.
Knowing others are enjoying your generosity always makes you feel good about how you handled the situation.
It is definitely the way to create a positive atmosphere for yourself and others.
Hats off to you for a wise decision.
Guess we can begin to call you......... "The Benevolent Bowman".
Hat off to a real gentleman.I am surprized how many fine person are in this forum, the elite of the already high profile persons, that are traditional bowhunters' You make me pround to belong to this group. PM sent for the Kodiak

These are really top notch replacements and will look great on the bows. I will send each winner a set to go on their new bow if they want them. Thanks again for the tremendous response. I have almost 50 names already to go into the hats for each bow. Good luck to all.

:clapper: :clapper: :clapper:
Congratulations to the winners! Like everyone else who did not win a bow, I'm a little disappointed for myself, but more than happy for the winners.
Chuck - You are truly the "Benevolent Bowman" !!!
Just can not stand to not get involved in such a down to earth give away.
I will donate the postage, $500 insurance and delivery confirmation from Rich to the Winners...
I will send $80 ($40 for each bow) to Rich for the Priority mail postage, $500 insurance and delivery confirmation so the bows will be completely free to the new owners...
There should be a few bucks left over, Rich can just send it to Trad Grang for providing this service to all of us.
Chuck - Why don't you just give one bow a month away... Let's see, next could be that Rosewood Sight Window 1959 Kodiak... Oh, yes, put my name in for that one !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a deal on the shipping! If it helps, I second the Rosewood Sight Window bow.
Wow, thanks Wade... this is too cool. I wish I could give everyone a bow who entered.... almost 100 names! That would leave me with only about 40 bows left for myself, I would feel naked and that's a visual nobody needs....
Thanks again Wade, I'm sure Bill and Bjorn will be even more pleased.
Bjorn- I will send you the leather strike plate and red feather rest tomorrow, Thanks for your reply. I hope you hunt with it soon, it was meant to be bent! :archer:
Well Chuck - We have a second for you to donate your Rosewood Sight Window 1959 Kodiak for the next drawing. I'm sure if we bring it to a vote on the floor, it will pass unanimously (maybe less one vote).
Shall I call for a vote?
Congrats to the lucky winners and hats off to Chuck and his kindness and generosity.
You all are great GUYS,nice to meet you every day
... my congratulations to the lucky winners! (http://www.broadheads.de/page/Animation/Smilies/firstprize.gif)
Many many Thanks to Chuck, for the ride (http://www.broadheads.de/page/Animation/Smilies/praiseleft.gif)
(http://www.broadheads.de/page/Animation/Smilies/cheers.gif) to myself - because of the thus spared hassle with our customs (http://www.broadheads.de/page/Animation/Smilies/SM.gif)
Chuck,
Wow....I feel so lucky right now and fortunate to win such a bow. This will make a nice addition to the collection. I went down last night early so to get up here at 4 am to meet a guy at an auction that has some Bear bows up for bid and he's also bringing me a Grumley I bought from him. This will go down as one of my best days in awhile for sure. I just checked I'm awake this isn't a dream.....thats cool.
Chuck...I really Thank you alot for the generosity you have shown...and thank you for the leather strike plate and feather rest also. Best Regards, Bill
To all, Please send all the Bear bows back to Michigan via my address...Thankyou
Wade, Thanks for the shipping and insurance...that was a nice addition.
:wavey:
Congrats to the winners!

Chuck, If'n your given more away, I think you should give them to the guys that didnt enter the last drawing, they already had their chance ;)
What ya think Bowdoc? That ups our odds just a bit wouldnt you say?????
:bigsmyl:
Trap
Chuck,
Hat's off to you sir for your mind-blowing generosity! A big CONGRATULATIONS!! to the winners... :clapper:
God Bless,
Frank
I like your thinking there Trap!
Rich, I left you out of the kudos on my last post. Did not mean to slight the tremendous generosity you also showed in this give-away.
You ROCK too Brother!
A tip of the fedora to a fine gentleman and generous man. Kudos Chuck!
Hell yea Trap, I'll give you pick of the litter... here's the deal, you come up here in the summer, say mid July when the Kings are running and I'll let you choose which bow you want. It is a hard decision to make and should not be taken lightly. So you will need about a week in Alaska to decide on that perfect bow for your collection. Bring good rain gear and boots. You can stay at my place and I'll take you fishing while you decide on a bow. Sound like a plan?
Dang Trap, what a deal! You better get all over that!! :D
So let me get this straight Trapaziod swings through Seattle on the way to Alaskan in july ? picks up bowdoc who is waiting along the freeway some place wearing a back pack and with G.Loomis noodle rod in hand(thats a long light weight fishing rod for you guy's who just said what the hell is a noodle rod).
We hang out at Chucks place for a week or two fishing.Shooting all kinda bows.Eating up all his food and drinking all his soda's ? I don't do alcohol so you boy's are safe there.
Then Trapazoid picks a bow from Chucks collection to bring home with him ? its the rosewood sight window 1959.
Then at a rest stop somewhere in Canada on a cold dark night while driveing back to Seattle to rid himself of the bowdoc finally after two weeks.Trap comes out of the can at the rest area looking around saying I'am sure I parked right here...his next words are doc you SOB come back here with my 59.You can keep the truck and all the fish we caught. But I want that bow back...bd
You guys are killn me! LOL
.....Scott
WOW Chuck, the offer to hand pick from your collection is very generous.
The offer to hang out with you in the Last Frontier for a week and benefit from free fishing guide fees and a place to stay is even more generous and something we can talk further about.
I've been looking at Google maps and Sorry Doc, I've been advised to head North from here to Winnepeg and then NW through Canada.
In reality though, a roadtrip with Doc to Chuck's house would be well worth the added fuel costs associated with picking him up along the way. I'm sure I'd come back with an education.
I think my old Toyota would make it Doc, Are you in?
Trap
Its a long drive to Seattle and you are going to need help. I will clear the calendar and you can swing by on the way north. After all, I am just up here in the Lapland of MO (Iowa) and I was born in Alaska (the territory - way back before statehood). Don't even really need another bow, just a trip home and a bit of fishing...
Congrats guys. I look forward to seeing more pics and hearing about the bows. Jack
ALASKA !
That's on the top of the list for me, drive the motorhome and stay at least 2 months fish....hunt...take it all in.
Rich....I sent you a PM this morning also and will say it here too.
I wanted to thank you also for your time and materials in refishing the bow and donating it for Chuck . That's a real nice thing to do. I'm looking forward to see one of your refinsh jobs. , Bill
Congratulations guys! :clapper:
One of these years I'd love to make that trip.I'd like to hunt black bear and do a little river fishing for salmon or steelhead...bd
You're always welcome Don, I would be happy to show you my stompin' grounds. Most of the bear hunting I have done has been spot and stalk bowhunting. The fishing is pretty good too that time of year, early run sockeye and Kings! (don't tell anyone else about the fishing, that's a little Alaska secret). We still have to go on the elk bowhunt we planned as well.
 to everyone..bhfp
Chuck What a fun and nice thing to do! Well done!!
Rich and Wade More proof of what a great group this truely is!
Bows, Bears, Kings, Sockeyes and Elk..What a awesome thread :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:
Thanks guys, it keeps getting better. I was talking to Trap today and he told me he would get involved in this giveaway as well. He would like to donate the feather rests and leather strike plates for the two bows. So Bjorn and Bill, please email Trap your mailing address and let him know what color feather rest you want. I was going with red to match the limb tip overlays but I've seen orange a lot of times on original '59 Kodiaks. Thank you very much Trap, I can use the rests and plates I bought on my own bows for sure.
Rich- Thank you for contacting the lucky winners, please understand that Wade Phillips is just sending you the money to cover the cost of shipping, insurance, and delivery confirmation but the bows are not to be shipped to Wade when you have them finished. Please send them to the new owners: Bjorn (Kadiak) and Bill ('59 Kodiak). Sorry if there was any confusion and thanks again.
And a big THANK YOU to great response I have enjoyed this last week, I really appreciate all the emails and phone calls. Our little traditional archery community is small and I appreciate all the positive feedback I have received.
Chuck
Trap...I wanted to thankyou for donating the Feather & Leather here also -pm sent
This sure is a great bunch of guys gathered here and being new here I believe fitting in will be the easy part. I hope to continue the friendship and maybe someday sit around a camp fire together talking about the day's adventures. Thanks so much to all.
Daryl,
The leather-feather arrived today... :wavey:
Trap
I don't know about Winnipeg, fly due west with Shaun, The new truck fits 4 bigguns and needs a test run,Alaska would be perfect lol.
North to Seattle for a quick peek at Docs (well ok, not that quick)Then off to the land of Chuck for some shooting/ fishing and lying.
I'll even switch it around and bring Chuck a bow of his choice, from Dons of course,if I can get him to turn his back for a second, dang sharp eyed old goat.lol
Kurt
Kurt, Now that sounds like a Plan. I like the way you think.
Heck I'll give him one of Don's bows also, or at least distract him while you lift one.
I love it when a plan comes together :)

Bjorn - Great looking bow. Just like Christmas all over again. Pleased to be able to participate.
Has your son has adopted it as his own? I'm smiling from ear to ear looking at his grinning face. Reminds me of how I felt as a kid every time I got a new bow.

Looks great Bjorn, glad you recieved it. It is a 55# draw weight, hope it shoots good for you.
This post is a little overdue, but the sun was finally cooperative today for a little picture taking.
Earlier in this thread Chuck graciously made me an offer to pick any bow from his bowrack and even more graciously offered to put me up in Alsaka for a little fishing trip. I hope to take him up on that fishing trip offer someday. I declined to pick a bow because that's just not me.
Okay to make a long story a little shorter, Chuck and I were visiting on the phone recently about bows and hunting, careers, the iditarod and who knows what else. During our conversation Chuck mentioned that he had recently offered a White Glass 57 Kodiak up for sale but still had it. A couple days later I asked Chuck if he would still consider selling the WG 57K. He told me that he still had some shooting to do with it and I fully understood that.
Some days later the postman showed up with a, you guessed it, White Glass 57 Kodiak. WOW!!!!
Somewhere in a previous post here on Trad Gang Chuck made a statement that we are simply "caretakers" of these great pieces of history and since most of them will outlive us, our role is to use them, shoot them, appreciate them and preserve them while we are here.
Collecting is really about the people you meet along the way and the friends that you are fortunate enough to make.
Thank You Chuck, I'm proud to be the "caretaker" of such a fine weapon. It really adds a touch of class to my bow rack and best of all shoots like an absolute dream. I'm looking forward to doing a little bunny hunting with it in years to come.
Here's a few pics and a little description.
1957 White Glass Kodiak 60" 52# refinnished beautifully by Don Ward aka. PHd Archer Bowmen, the real bowdoc, and whatever Mrs. Bowdoc calls him

Now that's sexy!!!! Thanks again Chuck, Trap
WOW and more WOW!! :clapper: :clapper:
chuck sounds to be one heck of a guy to give away such a fine bow. i guess he must think the same of u to make such a offer. i guess that just trad ganger's for u
Very very nice!I need one of those for hunting when in snows in MI.
Trap you got some fine stuff going on there!!
Chuck you rule!!
 :clapper: :clapper: :clapper:
The bow looks great there basking in the sun. Shoot the heck out of it. I bought that from a retired Bear dealer in Indiana. His name is Charlie Sutphin and he invented a casting bobber for fishing that was very popular back in the early '60s called the "Sutphin Spinning Float".
Well Trap, that is half of the deal, you got "pick of the litter" as promised . Now you have to come up fishing to complete the agreement. A man is as only as good as his word.
Awesome Chuck
Enjoy shooting that beauty and hope you don't mind me tagging along (vicariously, of course  ) on that "every sportsman's dream" fishing trip to Alaska!! :D
