Title: Loud Bow Noise- arrow hitting shelf?
Post by: allvus on August 26, 2013, 08:31:00 PM
I am shooting a 50# bow with 400 carbon arrows. It seems that out of nowhere I started hearing a loud noise as I release the arrow. It almost seems that it is happening as the arrow leaves the shelf. Any ideas on what I should be looking at?

Nock point could be to low causing arrow to bounce off shelf.  Arrows could be to stiff and be hitting the shelf

Seems like you should be using 500 carbon arrows with a 50# bow unless you have a lot of weight up front. Sometimes stiff arrows will cause that. Also too tight nocks? Or too low of a nock point?

However, as this is the form forum and not the equipment forum, I should limit my comments to form problems that could be the issue. Torquing the bow or the string can cause the arrow to slam into the strike plate. When you are at full draw, try relaxing your bow hand and string hand, and see if the bow wants to change position. Usually to a more upright position.  If this is the case, you need to draw more with your back muscles and relax your string forearm and hand so they follow whatever cant you put into the bow. Also your bow hand. With me, it's my bow hand thumb that wants to press against the handle.

Thanks for the comments, guys.
I have a new bow that is the same poundage, same BH and nock setting, and it is not having this problem. Anyway, I'll play with it some more this weekend and figure things out.
BTW, where should this have been posted?

Thanks
Steve

Comments regarding equipment should be posted to PowWow.  However, since there could be form related issues that cause the problem, this is probably okay.

Post your bow and arrow specs and it would be easier to decipher your issue exactly but sounds like to me too stiff an arrow and possibly a low nock point as well.

My bow is a 66" CariBow 50#@28. I use Beman 400 arrows, 28.5" long with 5" feathers and 145 grain field points. I use a fast flight bowstring, brace height is 7-1/4, string nock is set at 1/2". I shoot split fingers with a glove. Open stance.

Last night I removed my string silencers (Navajo Wool) and the noise reduced dramatically. Enough that I actually heard the string twang- which I've never been able to hear on this bow. I tied on two short pieces of rubber band and the noise returned somewhat- not near to the level it was before.

When you remove the string silencers, you slightly increase the performance of the bow. The fact that the first noise went away could indicate that arrows that were too stiff with the silencers installed were okay without the silencers. Assuming you want to continue to use string silencers, the solution would be to increase the point weight of your 400's or switch to 500's.

Thanks for your help, all. Put 175g field points on and she is much better.
I have some more questions about the remedy, but I will start a new post in PowWow. Sorry for the errant post...this is my first time.
