Title: Suggestions on form....
Post by: caligator on June 13, 2013, 09:41:00 PM
So I've been shooting Trad gear about six months now. My buddy has been letting me shoot his Treadway Black Swamp but I won "The Fighter" in the St Judes Auction. The new bow is 5 pounds heavier and @ 2 inchs longer. I do shake a little with the added weight but that will go away with practice. The sound is distorted for some reason, sorrythe videos are @ 2 min each. Thanks in advance

Kevin, the form looks pretty good to me, especially only after 6 mo of shooting. The bow looks like is bending good, string isn't at 90deg to the tip yet so it shouldn't be stacking yet for ya. Ill bet she smokes that arrow at your length. How does the grip feel?

Kevin,

Over all pretty good.  A nice controlled shot.  I see two things I would point out (us coaches can't leave well enough alone you know   :D  ).  You don't say how you are shooting or if there is some particular concern you have -- so these are two observations I'll make.

It appears as though  you are holding the string on the tip pads of your fingers.  The lighting is just off enough that I can't see the actual hook very well so I am looking at two things that make me think this.  First, I can see your string hand finger nails and second, your knuckles are sticking out as you reach full draw.

My suggestion is to try placing the string in the joint of your index and middle fingers and on the pad of your ring finger.  This will give you a stronger hook (called a deep hook) and allow the back of your hand to relax completely so the back of your hand is flat.

The other observation is during your draw.  Watch as you draw and you will see your string elbow moving in an upwards direction.  This is a draw that uses you upper shoulder (deltoid) and is a weaker way to draw the bow.

Try lifting the bow up to about nose level and allow both hands to move slightly down during the draw.  This will let the string arm elbow move in a SLIGHTLY downward direction and will feel and actually BE stronger as it is engaging the back muscles rather than the top of the shoulder.

To actually see what I am talking about, I have some videos on You Tube -- TheMoebow1 That might help -- if you haven't seen them.

Cory, the grip is great. I like it better than the Treadway, not that the Treadway was bad, yours is thinner and seems more comfortable to me. And that arrow is zipping right along. 537 grains and pulling @ 57-58 on my spring scale. Just a tad under 10 GPI.

Arne, Shooting good groups out 25 yards with the flyer just out of the group. Still hitting the target, just not in the group. I am using my tip pads and will try  both of your suggestions tomorrow, after watching some of your videos. Here is a 23 yard target.

knocks are too tight on the string- the only real sound I hear is when they "snap" on to the string, and when they are "snapping" off of the string- sandpaper around the string then pull them on and off a few times. will quiet the noise down, wait......... that has nothing to do with form.

If you can hit that block you can stick a pig! C-ya soon!

Yeah, but you most likely wont kill it.  Pig vitals aren't that big.  No where near as large as whitetails and they are even tilted a bit.

Scary statement for our sport.
