I don't know what it is but for some reson when I shoot at cans and tennis balls I shoot way better than I do when I shoot at a target. The same goes for 3 d targets.
Because your concentrating on a smaller target. In my backyard I shoot at leaves, clumps of grass etc.
Some people swear by shooting 3D to improve their accuracy.
I never shoot 3D, just stump shoot, roving and randomly picking out small targets from 10-40 yds. To me it's the best practice for practical bowhunting.
Place a 6" foam square on a stick out at 40 yds. fire some shots...you will be surprised at your accuracy. Smaller targets, better groups.
I'm with Joe on this one. I decided to forgo 3D last year and stump shoot at least 2x aweek.I've found my level of confidence has skyrocketed. I do shoot in my back yard and have a bag target that I painted flat black and use a stickon 3" target dot for my practice sessions from 10-26 yds. Sometimes I even amaze myself with my shooting since practicing this way.

If you aim small you hit small.
That is common. However, it is also good to shoot at things that really challenge you as well. If 3d targets are a challenge, I would suggest not neglecting them. Remember you may have a big target at close range at some point, so focusing within that particular target maybe important.
What better way to practice hitting deer in the right spot than shooting at deer targets?
I'm not criticizing 3D...it's not for me. I know where the vitals are on the animals I hunt and where to aim. 3D deer targets set at different angles and yardages help the bowhunter learn where to aim under that situation.
As a ground hunter, my methods are more efficient. I shoot from all angles, kneeling, uphill, downhill always selecting that small target to challenge me. I don't bowhunt from tree stands...not sure how many tree stands are set up on the 3D courses.
Take 4-5 small 6" foam squares and place them at random distances in your back yard Randy...Now spend a few days shooting at them. You will find you need to concentrate more on hitting those smaller targets BUT your groups will tighten. This should carry over to your Deer target shooting. You will be concentrating more at a smaller area where the vitals are located
Again...nothing wrong with shooting at deer targets.... :readit:
What really challenges me even more then 3d is life sized paper targets without the vitals circled or drawn in. I think that is a practice style often overlooked.
