I'm checking out the option of swapping to lefty due to some shoulder issues (sprangel's deformity and torn labrum possibly multiple times). So, I checked my draw length today.
Normally I draw around 27.5" when I shoot righty. I'm 6'1" with long arms (a 75.5 wingspan). I know this is limited a bit with my shoulder and even more so with some TP issues I've had. So I expected my LH draw to be a bit longer... but it wasn't a bit longer, it was A LOT longer. I draw 30.5" LH.
Is that kind of difference normal?
I shoot both right and left, and my draw length is close enough to the same to call it 28" either way. I would assume you are changing your alignment, or your expansion, in order to get a 3" difference in draw length. Could have something to do with your injuries. You could probably find out what it is by making a video with you drawing the bow both ways. But if you don't plan to shoot RH anymore it may not prove anything. From your description of yourself, it sounds like your draw length should be close to your LH draw length.
Of course, if you're using a much lighter weight bow LH, that would explain some of the difference.
Yeah for sure it is at least partially due to the lighter weight. I drew the light weight bow righty though and without significantly altering my form I found the draw length still right at 28" at best. I had to really extend the bow arm to get longer length and I think that it has to do with a lack of mobility on the right side.
I now shoot both ways and my draw length is the same...27".
