Title: cheek slap?
Post by: heartshoth on February 09, 2011, 08:00:00 PM
i am a right hand, split finger shooter...i have consistently had an issue with a very mild string slap on the left side of my face, just below my left nostril...is this ok?  does the string deflect that much to the left after my release? is my head position wrong?  all opinions appreciated

I can't, for the life of me, picture this. Where do you anchor?

As MaHaTa said, what you describe is hard to imagine. I'll throw out a possibility: If you're having a consistent 'slap' as it sounds from your description, and you don't have a raw or bloody spot, I wouldn't think it would be the string. I've yet to see a string slap mildly. I sometimes get a string slap to my lip, and if I don't correct my head position immediately, three or four shots later, I'll have a blister on my lip, if not a bloody lip. So, are you sure it's your string, and not, perhaps the cock feather on your arrow?? I could see that happening if you have an anchor point with the nock near  the corner of your mouth?  Some shooters actually use the cock feather against there face as another point of contact to check for a consistent anchor point.

Best I can do from your description:   :dunno:

I'd have to see a picture of this one.  I don't see how it's pysically possible to get a string slap on the left side if you are right handed.  Unless you are turning your head way to the right.

I'm with reddogge on this. A right hand shooter has the string on the right side of the face. If heartshoth is using a right hand bow and using the left eye to aim, by turning the head to the right ....than......... ?

not a typo unfortunately...i anchor on right side corner of my mouth...the reason i noticed it is because i have recently grown a beard and i feel the "mild slap" easier...NOW I'M CONCERNED...i'm going to have my wife video me shooting to see if we can figure out what i'm doing wrong...uuuuugggh...by the way its more the left side of my lip under my left nostril not my cheek so much

My vote is for some part of your tab or glove is rebounding and snapping you.  It cannot be the string unless you're only drawing 6", or less.

my wife is going to think i'm crazier than ever when i ask her to videotape me shooting...can't wait...i have a "dynamic" release (my hand ends up at my right shoulder after shot)...i'm perplexed and will try to get a video up sometime

no slur intended, about the typo- just it would have been an easy typing error to make- for me that is- being a techno peasant.
i really wanna see the outcome of this- fascinating stuff!!

A thought - what shape fletch do you use?  I tried a P&Y triangular and the fletch would hit my lip.  Possibly yours is thwacking you on release?

parabolic shaped fletching...5 inch (or 5.5?)...3 fletch at 12 O'clock, 4 O'clock and 8 O'clock...Stumpkiller did it hit you on the opposite side of your lip? (ie right hand shooter hitting left side of lip)

The cock feather poked my left nostril.  Didn't hurt - just tickled and was distracting.

That just doesn't sound right no matter how you type it.

I had the same problem. Turned out to be my tab hitting me. Switched to a glove and problem solved

guys...it was my TAB...i have a small string that holds it to my finger, the string "ends" are long enough that just after shot they whip around and barely hit my face...i'm not going to change to a glove but now i know that my form and  set up is "ok" and i'm not some freak of nature...aaaahhh...thanks guys
