Title: So at what distance do the trick shooters shoot at?
Post by: Rank Bull on July 16, 2010, 11:48:00 AM
I was watching a video of Byron, and was just wondering.

I mean I don't think I can even see a ring or aspirin at 15 yards...and I have pretty good vision.

Ever see Barry and Gene shoot aspirins out of the air. .  I think it was 30 - 50 yards ?  Awesome job.    Same with their 100 plus yard shots at the balloons on the fence.

During his live appearances, all of Byron's shots are between 10 and 15 yards. He says he wants to keep them at hunting distances. I have seen him live several years ago, and he is amazing! His vision has to be almost super-human.

As to Gene and Barry shooting aspirins out of the air at 30-50 yards...no way! I would believe 30 to 50 feet (15 to 17 yards), which would still be an amazing feat of archery. Glue an aspirin to a sheet of black paper, then back up to 30 yards and see if you can see the aspirin.

Although age has diminished my vision some, when I was flying planes, most of the flight physical dealt with vision. Their charts went to 20-10. I could go beyond that, but they just put down 20-10 because they weren't sure exactly what my acuity was. My point is my vision was beyond excellent, but I'm sure I could not have seen, much less hit, an aspirin at 30 yards even when my vision was at its best.

What impresses me the most about guys like Byron, Gene and Barry (and I'd add Ron Le Clair) is the hand-eye coordination they have to go along with their incredible vision. Most of us would have trouble hitting a tennis ball tossed at 15 yards, much less an aspirin! Granted, they have done more shooting than the average archer, but I think their ability goes beyond what simple practice would provide.

If you ever get the chance to see one of those guys shoot (not on TV or video but live), take it!

I think most of Byron's trick shots are at ten yards.

I saw a show where he was simulating shooting floating ducks in a moving boat at 75 yds and hit 2 of 3 ducks/balloons. That was AWESOME! I liked that shot better than the closer trick shots.

The Wensels were pulling your leg if you are talking about the Spirit of the Bow video. The were just kidding around with their "trick shots".

I saw Byron do some exceptional trick shooting last year at Denton Hill and I understand that he will be there again this year. The man can shoot ! Thats for sure!
Another really amazing trick shooter that doesn't get mentioned much was Stacey Grousecup.
I had the pleasure of watching and meeting Stacey several years ago at Denton Hill also. Let me tell ya folks that Dude was a tried and true instinctive trick shooter. His hand and eye coordination abilities were fenominal well into his 70's!

Sorry I take it all back! The Wensels are both awesome!!! I just can't figure out which one is the most awesome??????? Seriously though, Spirit of the Bow changed the way I shoot. Drawing on the target with your bow arm straightout works the best for me if I do it consistantly.   :notworthy:    :banghead:
