I am new to trad and am wanting to set up in may garage for the winter. What kind of backstop do yall use and how do you make it?
I have heard of hanging carpet scraps behind the taget but will it stop a fild point at close range?

I use woven poly bags stuffed with plastic sheeting or other plastic bags..the horse or livestock feed bags work good...compressed cardboard or even old ceiling tiles work good for a backstop...
Any of the Morrell bag targets are excellent. I have one hanging in my archery room. I have had it for 7 years. It has been shot by compounds, recurves and longbows. It is still good today.
I have a good bag target. What I'm needing is a backup just in case the wife or kid miss. We are trying to sell the house and I dont need any more sheetrock holes to patch.
I use a sheet of plywood,it a arrow hits it it just bounces off, I use it behind a bag target.

Carpet remanant do the trick nicely. Two or three layers is all you need and they are usually cheap at the local flooring store.
I always use steel or rubber blunt on my indoor target.
Please read the thread "what have you shot at home accidently". If you want to save your garage, garage door, car, goat.............. make it a good one.
3/4" plywood or something good like 3/4" particle board if you don't want a hole in your garage when you miss your bag target. I don't know how you do that in a typical garage, but it looks like it happens quite a bit. I usually only miss the bag when things go wrong on a shot when I get past 20 yd. and my garage is not that big. I would put a section of carpet in front of that to save the arrows from damage. I would put the fibber side facing you. I think the fiber side will pack more and prevent penetration better than the backing. Kind of like cutting from the back side of a hide. It needs to be out a couple feet from the plywood or wall so it can move to absorb the shot energy. The plywood is the last resort to make sure you don't shoot out the garage wall.
Last year at the Kalamazoo expo they used heavy cloth tarps of some kind as a backer hung from a line. The shooting was fairly close in distance. I want to say it was about 10 yd. It stopped field points no problem without penetration. You have to have it out a few feet from a wall so it can absorb the shot, but that worked great and would be all you need.

Yup. I got one hanging up behind my 3D's in the back yard. They're heavy, but if you can wire em up to a pair of T posts, they'll stay put.
Get a sheet of insulating board maybe 2 inches thick. It take a lot less out of the arrows. If the arrows penetrate the plywood, they can get messed up pulling out.
Does anyone have pictures of how they are hanging their "rubber horse mat"? I bought two a while back for use as a backstop but haven't figured out the best way to hang them as they are much heavier than I expected.

Or a truck bed mat works too.
Use a pipe and clamps over the pipe. does a nice job
You can wire it up but eventually it cuts. Takes a long time though

I just prop up a 30"x30" bag target and I've never missed it at 10 yards so no backstop is needed. Just for safety I did put some old pegboard in back of it.
