Title: What is TP? I may be able to help.
Post by: Lt. Dan on November 14, 2008, 02:37:00 PM
I used to teach golf lessons and am a scratch golfer.  I know what causes the "yips" and should be able to help some people here that have TP.  So what is TP?

Failure to execute the sequence of events in fluid manner.  The subconscious has everything to do with archery.  The fear of missing challenges your confidence.  Which leads to doubt.  Doubt blocks out the subconscious.  In an effort to make a good shot, the conscious mind takes over.  And you know the rest.  Now with a tournament archer, it isn't actually fear.  It's more of a control thing, that blocks out the subconscious.

Well I finally found out what target panic is.  Top notch shooters get this which is why I don't have it.  :)   It is exactly what the yips are.  I'm sorry I cannot help.  A touchy subject it is.  I've tried to give back to TradGang because I've learned alot lurking here for the last 3 years.  My advice would be to get a lesson from your local archery pro.

Dan, I dont know golf and yips, but I do believe TP is nothing more than either lack of faith in your shot sequence or not having a shot sequence.

There's a ton of info on TP here on this forum Dan. J. Kidwell thread is a prime example.

Any fresh insight would be well appreciated I'm sure.

Target Panic is a type of performance anxiety, the same things as the "yips" (I always heard it called "ball bound" until a few years ago). All sports suffer from them and have pretty much the same base causes.

Just as in that case the reasons and fixes are various - you can have a shyness of hitting the gold, hitting hitting your anchor, all sorts of things. I have a mild form of it with my clicker in that my mind can time when it is getting ready to go off and I just sorta - stop - and increase tension in my arm instead of my back.

If you have a great deal of coaching experience in getting golfers over the yips then you will mostly need to learn how to shoot from an instructional point of view.

For the most part coaching is coaching, a great football coach will most likely be a great archery coach and a great archery coach will be a great football coach. It is just learning your domain specific knowledge.
