There are a number of good books out dealing with tradional archery and that is where I would start my research. You could Google it and check some out. I have a copy of Sam Fadala's "Tradional Archery" which would give you some good basics on the sport.
I'm sure others could suggest better books.

Vic,
check yourself for eye dominance. If you never shot a bow, right vs. left handed doesn't matter as much; you'll be doing something new and awkward with both hands anyway. Look for a used target bow (=cheap but stable) to start practicing with. Let it be really light weight (#25 is not too light.) Yes, you can hold back a lot more weight and yes you'll eventually need a heavier bow if you want to hunt. But to learn the basics and to maximize the fun stay light in the beginning. Find some traditional events near you, walk up to people and ask for advice.
Good luck and ask away,
Aram
