Title: riser impact - what to do with tip weight?
Post by: BobW on August 27, 2008, 07:42:00 PM
Okay, it appears I am ending up with my arrow shaft hitting the edge of the belly and the shelf (significant strike plate wear, and now that I put a new plate on, the belly side is peeling.  Question is, more or less point weight.  I know I have an occasional little pluck too that I am working on getting out of my form.  Grip is proper, and no torquing.

P.S. - right handed
P.S.S. - can't do anything with shaft length

Bob,

As a greenhorn, I can only offer you what my findings were with the same problem.  I had too much point weight for the spine of my arrows.  Shawn Leonard helped me out with the point recommendation and it worked.  I dropped the weight down and the wear left.

I, too, had release issues and am finding that lack of proper back tension is most of my cause for the release problems.  YMMV.  I played around with my nocking height and even went as high as 3/4" before my release got better.  I am back down to a little under 1/2".  The higher nock point helped some as I didn't see the 'arrow kick' but as I improved my release I have been able to lower it.

I used a piece of blue painters tape on the side of my grip, up to the shelf so that I could see how often the arrow was striking there.  I used a little bit of red crayon rubbed on it which showed the strikes.  This gave me a good indication as I made progress with the release after getting the arrow tip weight correct.  It will also help as you (not seeing strikes)zero in on the right point weight for your 'grande' length arrows.   :D

I hope all that makes sense and best wishes that you get it figured out.

Hey Bob, I reread your post and I misunderstood where the wear was taking place (it is late night).  I thought you meant the rug edge and top of the grip at the shelf.    :banghead:

Sorry about that!  Now it is definitely out of my league.  I still think the release is a component of the problem.

Hi Bob

If I remember your set up, I would drop some point weight. I think when you start getting wear at the rear of the plate your arrow is flexing a little too much (weak).

Shot your bare shaft lately? How is that?

You said you added weight tubes, they say they dont effect spine but the weight may slow down the the recovery of the arrow.

Or maybe pull the tubes and try it.

Once you can rule out a form flaw..any shelf contact is either a problem of the shelf being too wide or arrow too stiff. Ideally the arrow should paradox around the shelf.Try more point weight may weaken the spine of your current arrow to obtain clearance. Spraying foot powder on the shelf work great for showing you contact points.

If none of the other stuff has worked, try raising your brace height.

Little update - problem is/was 2-fold:

A little more focus, and the "noise" has gone away (when I don't pluck   :knothead:

Still trying.....

Thanks!
