Title: Safe time frame to keep a recurve strung?
Post by: 450 marlin on April 30, 2008, 08:45:00 PM
Hello,
Just getting into the recurve shooting and I,m wondering what your thoughts are on how long a person should leave his recurve strung up? I'm trying to shoot every day, is it a good practice
to unstring after every shooting or can you leave
it strung for two days without hurting it? Its a
new Whisperstick bow.
                    Thanks, Roy

Mine stay strung forever.  As long as you keep it indoors in a cool environment when you aren't using it, you don't need to unstring it.  Don't ever put it in a hot car strung, though.

Roy,
I read the other day that Bob Thompson has a Zipper that has been strung for 30 years with no loss in performance. I would say a couple of days won't hurt at all.

Congratulations on move to traditional archery.

Keep it hanging parallel, on a couple of dowels or something.
I've got one hanging by the string from a couple of drawer knobs.
I've got one that can hang from the mantle, another on deer antlers. Keep it hanging straight, by the string. Look around, you've probably got someplace it can hang or maybe you'd like a woodworking project(bow rack) too.

Do a search, in PowWow, for bow racks, in the Title only.

Here's what one nice one was. First one I came to when I was looking for you. You'll see some for unstrung bows.

I hang mine like Wood duck does.  In a cool area, away from direct sunlight.  15 years is about the longest I've done it though.  I've had no issues.  I would unstring it if I were traveling very far and was not going to be in the vehicle(to control temperature)the entire time.

Mine stay strung from Sept til end of Jan unless I'm travelling. I hang them on "J" shaped hooks when not in use. Just make sure you use a good bowstringer when you do unstring them. Just make sure you check the brace periodically, depending on the string you use, you may get some stretch.
