Over the past month or so out of the blue, my release has started putting lots of pressure on my ring finger. It rubs pretty good and I'm developing almost a callous there. It gets tender but not too painful as long as I don't shoot too quickly.
I am having a very tough time figuring out how to avoid it. Its inconsistent and I can't predict when it happens. I also don't notice it affecting my shots to any extent. I'm very confused.
I have fought the same problem off and on for the last year or so, and I believe it is caused from torquing the string, at least in my case anyway. I have seen several posts about it on this site, so your not alone. Others have suggested its caused by high drawing elbow and incorrect or uneven string pressure. Maybe Terry,Rod, or one of the others will jump in and help you out.
I have a small callus on my ring finger also. The callus is not as bad as it use to be because now I am distributing the strings pressure more evenly across my three fingers.
The callus on my ring finger was a result of having a heavy third finger. In other words I was carrying the majority of the strings pressure on my ring finger.
The callus that I have is on the side of my ring finger next to my pinky. Does this sound about like the problem that you are having? In the beginning my ring finger was tender but that went away.
Try putting a band aid on your finger prior to shooting. It works for me.
Usually having your bow pulling arms elbow too high will allow the string to put more pressure on the third finger. As you bring the elbow down from full draw youll see the string relation to fingers change and more pressure goes to the index or upper finger. find a happy medium to settle on it. Other than that make sure your glove or tab has adequate padding. I use Steves Trad American Leather glove and it proetects and works great.
Thanks for the help. The part that confuses me, is that I don't even feel like I have pressure on my ring finger when i draw, but obviously I do. A recent minor change, may actually have been trying to lower my draw elbow, which is opposite what should happen though? I've played around shooting only 2 fingers and I may just go to that if I can't get this figured out. Its annoying more than painful. I'll just keep trying things
