I was hoping to sell a knife to a fellow member here from the classified of course. I got the package all ready to go and was just getting a quote however the lady at the post office tells me its a prohibited item and could be confiscated.
Does anyone know how to do this safely? It is a 10" fixed blade in its sheath and buckled tight. Then of course in the box I wanted to ship it in.
Your Canada Post lady is misinformed.
Ask her to point to the law on either side of the border that states a knife of such a design is actually prohibited.
If it is spring or gravity assisted it is an issue in Canada. Not in the U.S.
As far as i know, the only state that has prohibitions on knives is N.Y. State, and they are related to size and age of purchase.
I bought a truckload of knives from the US, nothing prohibited. Everything was shipped and labelled "knife'.

Unless required to be specific, just say it is sporting equipment.
As a lifelong guide (now mostly retired) guys who hunted with me would sometimes send me a knife as a gift after the hunt from the U.S.A. and there was never a problem.
Traditional bows can also be wrongly classified by people with their own personal views/agenda.
On a trip to Alaska in 2015 a "lady" (?) that works for an airline was giving me a hard time about my cased longbow and told me I would have to go through the same process as hunters with firearms.
I had to show her that according to the rules of her company, bows were classified as sporting equipment (I had checked before the trip).
Even after that, she told me that if it was used to kill something than it was a weapon!
Fortunately one of her male co-workers came to my rescue and got me through.
This and your experience with the person at the post office are but more examples of how much the western world's logical pendulum has swung into the ridiculous zone.
I've shipped quite a few to Canada without any issues. I just made sure I listed on the customs form what it was and so far, everything has made it to its destination without ant issues.
Very often it comes down to that individual's feelings, opinions, and knowledge or lack thereof, of their company's regulations. Most just don't know what the heck they are talking about. You have to do the research for yourself then show it to them. Been there, done that.
