Title: OTC/DIY
Post by: actionjackson22 on February 22, 2018, 03:05:00 AM
I have been building points in Wyoming for a couple of years now and I'm kind of tired of the whole drawing thing. I was going to go Elk hunting but got a new job,I was going to go Mule deer hunting and we had a baby(I know I could have helped that) So I have been looking into hunts where I can just go buy a tag and hunt public and be happy. I think that's how hunting was meant to be anyway. So some options I wanted your thoughts on, AZ Mule deer after new years, Col. Elk and Eastern Colorado Antelope. Thanks

We're planning a DIY elk hunt in Colorado for the first time this year. Lots of OTC units there and I'm going with a group of 3 other guys so that will help with fuel, expenses, etc. Colorado has a ton of OTC units. Several of the guys here go every year and are successful.

Colorado OTC can be crowded and eastern Colorado pronghorn is mostly private.  Wyoming might have better options for antelope. OTC elk or AZ January hunt are probably better options than eastern CO antelope.

There is a good amount of state and government grass land in eastern co. I also think a lot of ranchers would get a kick out of someone trying to hunt speed goats on their land with a stick bow if you would ask them.  I was successful a couple years ago in the far southeast corner of co on national grassland.

The only problem I had with OTC in Colorado was the altitude.  10k ft kicked our butts and we were in good shape going in.

Idaho can offer some pretty good OTC elk if your careful about the wolf situation.

yeah I've read some things about Idaho and have been interested just trying to dig up more info. I also have been looking at western bear hunts,I know there tough but I hunt PA for bear every year and I don't know if there is a tougher hunt than that lol. I hunted Wyoming for antelope but as I was trying to allude to in the post I like the idea of buying a tag myself and not entering draws for awhile. I have two points in Wyoming and when my Dad retires we will go Lord willing but for now I just want to buy a tag and try. Arizona Mule deer is the front runner right now just because I have shutdown every year for Christmas.
