Title: string suggestions
Post by: bhylton on February 04, 2018, 10:02:00 PM
all, looking for bow string suggestions. all bows are FF compatible.
bows:
62in samick sage, 40# and 55# "use the same string for both sets of limbs"

60in samick sage deluxe 30#

60in Marriah thermal take down recurve 70#

60 in Marriah willawa 1 piece recurve 55#

In the past i have just picked up a FF string "D97 i think?" from Lancaster for the sage. What do you guys recommend for string material for the bows listed? i am fairly illiterate on string material and look forward to any insight. I will be traveling for awhile so i wont respond right away, but look forward to hearing everyones knowledge! thanks!

I started using Fury strings this year, they've held up better than any other string material I've used! I start elk hunting in September and by the time deer season is over at New Year my strings have looked like a cat had played with them in past years. This year my Fury string looks practically new still after hunting season was over!

I have been making my own strings for my bows for 20+ years and have used many different materials.Like the original Fast Flite,D97,8125,8190,450+,Ultra Cam and now BCY-X.BCY-X has become my favorite,I make an 18 strand BCY-X with 22 strands in loops served with Halo .021 give me great nock fit for Easton 3D Super nocks,X-nocks(Axis/MFX),H-nocks(Beman Centershot) and large groove G-nocks.I make them for 45# to 65# bows I have.

Another big fan of BCY-X here.

Very durable, stable, quiet.  I actually bought a Samick Journey when BCY-X hit the market 6-7 years ago, just to test the then-new material.  Still shooting that bow--it's a real shooter with a good string. I like 18-20 strands, 24 in the loops (when Flemish).

Like JRY, I've been building strings for over 20 years, most of that time commercially, and I've tinkered with a lot of materials and strand counts in that time.

If you prefer a 100% Dyneema material, 8125 or Dynaflight '97 are hard to beat.  Keep in mind that how well the string is made will make as much or more difference as the material used to make it.

FWIW, archers like Rod Jenkins, Jason Westbrock, and Denny Sturgis Jr. are using BCY-X.  Guys like Dewayne Martin, Calvin Smock, and Brady Ellison are using 8125.

sounds like bcy-x is a common favorite. Chad, you mentioned d97 and 8125 if i preferred 100% dyneema. is there any REAL advantage to 100% vs a blend? im just looking for a quite string for hunting. i read the info page on your website and agree there is no magic string haha.

Old goat, i have not heard of the Fury material but i always enjoy a new item to read up on and research, thanks!

as far as serving goes im open to suggestions also. i tend to shoot GT .246in carbons using the standard Gold tip GT nock. And i have no problem re-serving a string if need be.
Thanks everyone, i dont post often but i appreciate the insight when i do. Cheers!

Lots of variables to consider.  Generally speaking, the blends are going to be more stable, especially in higher temps.  In my experience they are usually quieter.

Chad do you think D-97 is as quiet as BCY-X ,some one told me 97 is quieter on Bear bows for some reason

For me, materials with Vectran seem to be a bit quieter...but tuning, build, silencer placement, your release, etc. are all as much or more important.  I've shot both BCY-X and Dynaflight strings that we're very quiet.
