Sad day...met Roger and his oldest son, Ron, at bear camp at Walters Wilderness Camp back around 1997.  What a surprise to find he was there and so approachable.  That time in bear camp was filled with stories, shooting help, and just laughing and talking about life.  RIP Roger...and God Bless Ron and Ryan and family.

Wow.. as everyone says, this is a very sad day for me also. Roger was always one of my favorites. We first became friends in 1970 or maybe '71 and would send each other personal cassette tape recordings because it was cheaper than talking long distance for literally hours on end back then. He also used to type me some really long letters. We'd compare findings, exchange opinions (which often were identical) and plans for the future. I lost most of the recorded tapes in our fire in '99 but I still have a couple old letters he sent me. One is special in that he was telling me he and Jane had just had a new baby (Ryan), and he was a pretty good little bugger.
I always thought Roger was a very good writer and told him so. He claimed writing did not come easy for him. He told me he feared his writings might not be taken as he intended, but I always found them great. Maybe it was because we often thought alike. I remember him telling me he purposely wouldn't tell the reader every minute detail. He would crack the door open and whet their appetite just enough to encourage them to find their own answers/opinions and share them with others. I find myself doing that same thing today. I learned a LOT from Roger.
The thing I'm most disappointed in is the fact we didn't live closer. He lived a little out of the way for my normal routes to wherever. I last saw him on Aug. 17th when Gene and I stopped at the farm for a nice two-hour visit. He was an impressive, impressive man and one I was proud to call a friend. He was a one of a kind guy. Those who didn't know him really lost out. I'm so grateful he left a legacy with his books for the future generations. He was in a league all his own in my opinion. My most sincere condolences to the entire Rothhaar family. BW

Well I've been away for a couple days this is sad news indeed.... he was an encyclopedia... man what a shame I hope that tradgang can continue to carry on what's being left behind by some of these men that were pioneers ....these men of greatness.... even though Rodger wouldn't want to hear that this is the stuff that we're trying to preserve here on tradgang the stuff of Rodger, Fred Bear, Paul Shaffer, Howard Hill, Jack Howard and the lights that maybe one day people can look back and see where we all came from and it's not a forgotten past.

Godspeed to all those related to Roger bless his family as they move forward in this time of grieving.

Roger was one of a kind for sure. He lived a life worth living and left a lasting impression in whitetail wisdom. I will miss him. I spoke with him for almost an hour just a few days ago. Barry, when you had to leave back in August, I stayed there with him for three more hours. We had a ball making fun of you! Many years ago, he and Jim Emerson came to the Bitterroot to hunt elk. I set them up in a good spot and they played cat and mouse with a couple bulls for over a week. Finally they came back into town with no headlights all the way down over Skalkaho Pass. They both took showers at my house. When they left, I pulled a bucket of body hair out of my shower drain! I wore rubber gloves the entire time! Roger told me he kept seeing the same cow elk four days in a row. I asked him how he was so sure it was the same cow elk? He told me he "recognized her ass." Good eye! Another time I was with them in a van when Roger was driving in Atlanta, GA traffic at night in a bad neighborhood. Jim kept yelling "GREEN LIGHT!" and Roger would slam on the brakes. I thought I would wet my pants when those two got going at each other. Another time I was driving through Great Falls, Montana with Roger when I got pulled over by a cop. When I handed the cop my drivers license, I pointed out that today was my birthday, thinking he might cut me some slack. He continued writing me a ticket. When the cop handed me the summons, he said, "Happy Birthday, Gene!" Roger didn't let it pass. Those were the days. I already miss him. Ryan, give me a call when you need help. I'll round up a crew. God bless you, Ronnie and your families.

Wow ! I am still reeling from this sad news! I just had a lengthy at least hour long conversation with Roger yesterday evening all he spoke about was how poorly he was feeling . As his phone battery was petering out i told him i would call him back tonite and we said good bye .
Roger and i first met in 1976 on my way to Springfield Ohio , he gave me instructions which included "do not pass the crossroad " when i saw the ocelot sign, guess what i drove right thru the cross road and by his home!
During the 80's Roger, Donnie Assenheimer , and Jim Emerson spent much time hunting Bears from my home in Northern Ontario ,we had so much fun , Jim had an especially great sense of humour! WE shot many Bears, watched the Northern lights at night and enjoyed the company of many other bowhunters I was guiding.
I could right a book my self on Roger, he was an exceptional hunter, had a heart of gold , shared hunting info freely and hunted for all the right reason's.
I'll miss you Roger RIP

I missed this thread being busy with work. Saddened by the news! I got the privilege of meeting Roger at our local Waltonian Archers Club Toddville, Iowa during the early 80s. I was glued to his Whitetail presentation during the Rendezvous and he demonstrated the sharpness/cut-on-contact benefits of the original Snuffers through deer skin leather and rubber band loom testers... He was and is a Legend that I got to learn from for which I am grateful! My buddy and I both bought a package of broadheads that night. Sure wish I had them still today...

My condolences to Ryan and family, along with my prayers that God might see you through this difficult time.

It saddens me to hear this as R.R. was one of my heroes. I have read his books, and I called a spoke with him a few years ago, he was very nice and told me hunting stories and tips for probably an hour. I truly hope the younger guys just getting into this stuff  understand the community that is available to them in the traditional bowhunting world. As a young man I pestered Roger via phone for hours trying to glean bowhunting knowledge and he was more than accommodating. Two of the other guys I was always bugging have already commented on this thread. It's not even necessarily about bowhunting success. It's about how to live a good life in a world where it seems to be increasingly more difficult to do so. Ryan....if you and your family read this....my condolences. Know that your father has left a major impression on many of us and has given us a blueprint to be followed as bowhunters.

RIP Roger, you will be missed.    I had the privilege of living down the road from Roger for many years.    He hated poachers more than anything.    One night I was driving by his house slowly to see if he was in his chair, nothing, so I kept driving to the house.   Next thing I know, here comes a truck barreling down on me.   I pull over and here comes Roger, "oh, its only you".   Yeah Roger, who'd you think it is.  "These damn poachers ride by my house, I thought you were one of them".   A few weeks later,  I come down the road at dark, pass Roger's house and make it around a turn, when all of a sudden here comes a set of headlights on my tail.   I pull over  and it's Roger. He said,  "dammit, its you again".   Yeah Roger I live on this road.   He started laughing.   He said, "do me a favor, if you drive by my house at night, honk the horn so I know its you".   I said no problem.

A Roger story I'd like to share.

The first Great Lakes Longbow Invitational was in 1985. After a couple of years It drew large crowds of longbow shooters from across the country. Roger showed up at the shoot one year and we told him he had to shoot a longbow and wood arrows on the coarse. He put his recurve and aluminum arrows in his truck and borrowed a longbow and some wood arrows and shot around the coarse.

Afterwards I ask him how he liked shooting a longbow and wood arrows, his answer was,   "It was better than getting poked in the eye with a sharp stick"    :biglaugh:

Back in the '80s Roger did a seminar in Terre Haute, IN. After the seminar I had the good fortune of having dinner with Roger and Gabe Shafner. Gabe, who was a fantastic whitetail hunter in his own right was so excited to meet with Roger and share tales and tactics. After the dinner Roger told me how excited he was to meet Gabe! Two of the best whitetail hunters in the world, asking each other questions and swapping hunting stories...great times!

One year at Cloverdale, Roger stopped by our camp. We invited him to try some of the summer sausage we were having and he really enjoyed it. As he got up to leave he winked at me and told me that the sausage might be going bad, but he would be happy to get rid of it for me! He left with a smile and half a role of sausage! ;<)

Roger's passing is a great loss to the whitetail hunting world, but nothing compared to the loss that Ryan and family is experiencing. Prayers to all the friends and family and a thank you to Roger for always being willing to share your knowledge with anyone that asked. Rest in Peace.

I met Roger many, many years ago at the Dixie Deer Classic. He had me do the 'penetration test' that I'm assuming he did at all the events he went to. The penetration test was to push a modular broadhead through some kind of tanned skin and then do the same with the Snuffer. The Snuffer went through effortlessly and the modular head either would not go through or it took a great amount of effort to do(I don't remember its been so long ago). That sold me on Snuffer broadheads.

I was also impressed by how much of a down to earth guy he was. Here I was a novice bowhunter and he was talking to me just like I was his equal. Definitely made an impression on me.

I ordered some Snuffers later and also wrote him a note asking questions about the snuffer and how it would work with the equipment I was shooting. Roger wrote me a lengthy letter giving me some details on some of his kills and advice. I have never forgotten that either.

Ryan and family - my most sincere condolences to you and your family. Prayers for peace in this trying time are on the way.

Sincere condolences and prayers to the Rothaar family.  I enjoyed reading Roger's literary work "In Pursuit of Trophy Whitetails" years ago, and hearing about, and learning from his whitetail exploits. He rests with many other greats who individually and collectively sparked this incredible interest in so many of us to pursue this path of traditional archery and bowhunting.

Am still in shock. Ryan called me early yesterday. He was my best friend for 49 years and I'll dearly miss him. We had many great hunts together.

RIP the Whitetail Master, Roger Rothhaar.

Prayers to Ronald and Ryan and families.

One of my favorite possessions are my books by Mr. Rothaar... In my "Whitetail Magic" he inscribed.... "May the magic of the whitetail forever enrich our lives" and signed it. What a wonderful way to look at this great endeavor. To be so accomplished yet so enthused and engaged.

My condolences to his whole family.... wish I had the chance to meet him. What a neat legacy for them. Something to aspire to!

Prayers going up for the Rothhaar family. Like many here, I met Roger in the 80's when it seems like a lot of the "Whitetail Magic" we all long for began. He was doing a whitetail seminar here and I had a full time taxidermy shop at the time, I was doing a "field care" seminar. Roger at that time was also doing his own taxidermy. Very friendly and easy to talk to, we talked deer hunting and taxidermy every time we ran into each other after that. He will be missed but always remembered.

My condolences to Rogers family.
Always sad news to hear of loss in our traditional bow hunting brotherhood.
I never had the pleasure of meeting Roger, however, the knowledge he so generously shared was always present as I attempted to figure out buck deer.

I shot his broadheads years ago, I called him to talk about using them . It was a 3 hour conversation , he loved bowhunting and would help ANYBODY be better at it. Talked to him many times over the years at different functions, very humble man who loved his family Probably one of the top 3 whitetail bowhunters that EVER lived. Condolences to his family and please carry on his legacy! RIP big guy !!!!!!

Never met the man or talked to him but it shows through his son Ryan! I was having a horrible time sharpening a bunch  of snuffers I had and pmd Ryan on here for some help. Ryan told me to send him the heads. They came back razor sharp and with step by step instructions on how to sharpen!! I will never forget that gesture. Ryan god bless you and your family!!

So sad!  He was one of those guys that just liked you and you liked him.  I stopped, un-announced, at his place on the 4th of July and he welcomed my family in and we even sat and watched some videos of him hunting black bear!  Got all his books and will miss the fact that he is no longer out there with us.  God bless to his family.
