Title: How many ordered a Bear Limited TD?
Post by: cacciatore on January 05, 2018, 03:26:00 AM
I have seen that some of you ordered the coming Bear Limited Edition TD, I am waiting for it myself. Knowing that there are many Bear fans here I am wondering how many of us have ordered one.
I am on line for a lefty and for a rh for a buddy.

Email Bear I guess on the limited, not sure if true but heard 6-8 months wait, as the limited is being built by just one bowyer.

Thank you Todd. The wait is not a problem. Not sure what I will do but worth looking into.

Bill,

Call Big Jim. He may have a few spots left. If not, PM me. I know of two other larger dealers that may have several spots left.

We have some serial numbers for sale too. Pick the hand and weight you want for it as well (except for one number that is already ordered). Still in the waiting game for when they ship though. Talked with Neil at Bear Archery at the ATA show. Sounds like they are actively built right now.

No. Not in sequential order. I believe the lower poundage limbs are being made and shipped first.

I'm hearing about bad glass issues on the limbs. Check out the unwrapping video that 3Rivers posted. I'm becoming a little scared.    :scared:  Thinking I will be reconsidering continuation in the series.

Streaky glass is common now which SUCKS. Maybe some bowers can chime in but I dont think it affects the integrity of the glue joints at all.
Its just a case of "less" clear glass these days not sure why that can't be fixed but I dont make the stuff..

I know bear would back it with the customer service if there ever was an issue. I can't wait to see one next to a animal!!

I noticed he didn't ooooh and aaaaah over the limb glass. The streaks are quite noticeable.

Very discouraging.

He does say "glass looks good"

It is a good looking bow but dont think I could handle the streaking for that money
Title: Re: How many ordered a Bear Limited TD?
Post by: Orion on February 28, 2018, 03:41:00 PM
Agreed rr. That glass has a lot of streaking. Some builders are managing to pick out good/unstreaked glass for their bows.  One would think Bear could do the same.

I was planning to reserve one, but think I'll wait awhile now.  I may lose out, but I don't think I want to buy one sight unseen.

I got mine, full of streaks in glass, plus limbs didnt line up, and the string was for a longbow, its back at Bear, for the price, it better be flawless.  Thinking seriously of selling it when i get it back, this bow shouldnt have never left the factory! Lacking in the quality control dept!

This is a bad news, I really hate to hear that a so well know company can make such a huge mistakes on a bow that has to be the flagship of the high quality traditional line.

Post by: Yooper-traveler on March 01, 2018, 11:33:00 PM
I really hated to see that in the video.  I already have a Bear TD but could always use a limited TD.  After some of the comments and that vid, I'm a little put off.  I own and have owned Blacktail, Silvertips Big Jim etc... The quality, fit and finish of those bows are perfect.  I would settle for nothing less from Bear.  I do hope it's a few isolated incidents.

I wanted a limited edition in the worst way.  Only reason I didn't was an estate auction steal 53#@28 stalker recurve by South Cox and Steve sent me a 49#@28 Northern mist classic longbow. I'll still get a bear takedown in the future.  But I think I heard enough to stear me clear of the limited edition.

If I could have justified it I may have ordere one. But am not a TD fan as much as a SK person. Bad glass, bad fit, equals no pride in workers work.

I called Bear the other day to see if they received my bow yet, and they did, i asked what he thought of the glass and if they had strung it up yet to see how out of line the top limb was. He said he didnt know, but he should hear something in a few days, its not like i am hands on he said as customer service, where he is , is in Indiana, and my bow is in Gainesville! Really! Havent heard anything yet!

mooshkat, the person you really need to get in touch with is Neil Byce.  The guys at Evansville seem to know little about bows in my experience.  PM me if you want Neil's contact info.  I had to go that route.

Just ask for your money back. If enough people do just maybe they will get you heir act together. When they loose enough money maybe they might do something.

As a new fan of Bear Take downs I'm really disappointed to see these problems with a special edition bow. Seems like quality control took the day off, and that's to bad.

I was overseas and missed out on the initial orders, but as a long time Bear archery fan who had missed out on the early 80s signature bows, and someone who had many many conversations with Frank Scott... When I heard about these bows I called Neil Bice  and he told me about the glass problems from Gordon Plastics.  By this time everything had been resolved and so I started looking for some  traditional archery suppliers where I could get in on the first run of these bows so that I can collect all 4. All the companies that I contacted were very helpful, and I now have in hand one in hand, one on the way that someone cancelled and also found the opportunity to order 3 consecutive serial numbers. The bow I have in hand has no glass issues at all and everything is flawless...as it should be with a limited addition bow that cost $1600.

Regarding the quality of these bows, there's a commercial point that I'd like to make regarding quality control. Upon arrival at Big Jim's, bows are inspected and I'm certain that the customer would never receive a bow that had glass problems or any kind of quality defects. I think upon inspecting the bow, either Big Jim or his wife would catch any quality issues and simply send them back to Bear and the customer would not even have to deal with such an issue. That's a huge advantage to customers that reputable, conscientious and experienced bow builder/dealers provide. There are actually several advantages that good dealers provide such as that extra step and quality control that I just mentioned.

I inspect all the bows that go through our doors.. new, used and my builds of course.  I have sent back more than a few bows to different companies, but I must say that there are no perfect bows!  I have never built a perfect one yet I keep trying.

I will also say that I have just gone through an entire roll of BearPaw glass (300+ feet) in my bows,  and  while it is very nice and mostly clear, it is not perfect either.

Rest assured that If I miss something, or you are not happy for any reason, I will make it right.

Saw that mooseskat.  The fella you traded it to put it on the big auction site a week or so later and made a couple hundred bucks on it.  I'm still on the fence.

Edited this post after seeing Yooper's post below. Obviously not Mooseskat's/Yooper's bow.  Different serial number.

Unfortunately that is the way it is Blackstick. Bear has been behind on all of there upper end bows for years.
They have far fewer employees in the Traditional side than they need and finding good help is a real struggle. Coupled with finish and glass issues, it's a wonder they have shipped as many as they have.

And the "far fewer employees" they have seem to not be doing a great job on quality control.  I won't go into my issues regarding bows that should never have made it out the door, but in spite of that, I really like Bear bows but will only buy another now if I can get my hands on it first.

I gave up on the bear takedowns , two bad "A" handles and seven sets of limbs that did not fit correctly or did not fit at all ! Its a shame cause I have seen others with older perfect bear takedowns.

Finally got my LE. I ordered another set of limbs to shoot on the riser because I didn't want to take a chance on the limbs that came with it. To look at them they are flawless. However I did try to assemble the bow just to make sure everything fit. Guess what! The limbs don't fit the riser they were made for or any of the other 7 wooden risers I tried them on. They did fit on an "A" Mag riser. After all the problems Bear had with these limbs, they are still letting them out the door.

These are truly beautiful bows. Sort of unfortunate for them to have the issues I've read about. I've seen the cloudy/streaky glass and can't imagine receiving one like that. My good friend and hunting partner bought (thru auction) the exclusive TD Limited built as a commemorative bow for Compton. I don't recall the exact defect, but he picked up a noticeable flaw (crack I believe) in the riser and subsequently Bear had to build an entirely new commemorative riser for him. I had one of these TD Limiteds in my sights and was really close to buying, but ultimately decided not to risk the potential headaches.

You guys who got the good ones...you have my admiration and I'm happy for you!

Count me as a satisfied customer!  Lots of opinions on the LE and value vs cost but for me the purchase was beyond expectations and I will pony up for the A handle when available.
