Good morning all. A friend of mine has been on a caribou hunt back in the late 80's, Him and I are talking about trying to find a self guided caribou hunt to plan. Just trying to find a good hunt that wont break the bank..This would be a hunt of a life time for me, its on my tiny bucket list. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks again and God Bless..
Alaska fly in hunts for caribou are great. Check out air taxi services. You'll do a lot better then the drive to spots.

But DO YOUR HOMEWORK! There are a lot of air taxis that will not care if your are a month away from migration, they will drop you off, come back in a week or two, and say "gee whiz" there were caribou here just before you got here"!
I agree that you had better do your homework. The caribou hunts from the 80s do not exists in many locations. Many of the herds from just 15 years ago are long gone. There are some good air taxi services in Alasaka but there are many that will rip you off in a minute.
I would strongly suggest that any references you get are less than 3 years old. Get in the best shape of your life and do what you need to do to increase your accurate shooting range as much as possible.
Here is my last tip and it is a big one... carry a sat phone and get a guaranty from your transporter that they will move you if you are not on caribou.
We just did a hunt in Alaska for caribou and it was awesome. I have done it over a dozen times and still love it.
Look up Mark Kenyon (sp?) from the Wired to Hunt podcast. He just did a hunt with Meateater and was successful. Maybe he can give you some advice as well. He used an air taxi service as well.

Floyd, with any d.i.y. hunt planning, I believe it pays to contact the state DNR or it's equivalent and get in touch with a wildlife biologist for direction. They know more about their area than anyone, don't have a financial interest and I've never talked to one who wasn't willing to help. My trips now are for fly fishing and the same applies for fishery's biologists.
