Wondering if Barry Wensel has a new video out called The Crooked Hat Chronicles. Saw it on a Facebook page but can't find it on their site.
VIDEO!!!! WHAT ???? I know there is a book
I hope there is a video
Barry's new dvd is a 4 hour compilation of his 50 year history. It's fantastic and brought back so many memories for me. I was able to watch it Monday. My son is home from college from Christmas break. He had a couple friends over who are casual hunters. They sat and watched for TWO full hours; 18 year old boys these days don't do anything for two full hours!
There is great OLD footage from his start, great footage from all the early Bowhunting October Whitetails stuff and behind the scenes footage from that area, and incredible behind the science footage from his current BOTB era. It is so well done! In today's world of overproduced and over dramatized outdoor tv, it is so genuine and refreshing.
You can't get it on the BOTB website, you have to get it directly from Barry: right now people can only order it directly through me at: barrywensel@hotmail.com. They are $20. plus $5. S&H. But it'll need to be checks or money orders because I'm not set up for paypal or credit cards yet since this is separate from the other stuff on BOTB.
I watched part 1 last night. It was incredible the bucks he and Gene pass up. He tells a little history on each one and what happened to them.
They always tell me of the ones they let walk but once you see them, it's a whole different perspective!
Great stuff
What is the name of it? Will it be available on Brothers of the Bow site?

I'll never forget Gene texting me a pic of Burly from the stand one Saturday morning to rub in that he was hunting and I was working...and me thinking he was crazy for passing up a 4.5 year old buck like that. Then being amazed at what he looked like FOUR years later when Barry killed him. Lots of GREAT video of Burly and Hurley, and Woody, and dozens of other buck; a couple even better! Biggie, you will enjoy the credits; even the credits are worth watching!

Eventually, but that is a TBD thing, it's not a BOTB project and so you have to go thru Barry directly right now. Would make a GREAT Christmas present!
Again:

Just sent an email. Go Tall Tines!
email sent
Steve can you list the address for us to order send payment. Thanks
I just got off the phone with Barry....he said their new web site would be up soon and they would have paypal available for orders.
Great news.....and from Barry's account to me, my take is that this is a 'must have' for the bowhunters library.
I'm sure Barry is good with his email being posted...I'm not putting his home address on the internet. You guys are going to have to email him. I let him know this thread was here so I am sure he will drop in and add any extra info.
Barry's address is on the Brother's of the Bow web site as well as his email address....just look under 'Boot Camp' and he has it posted.

Hope that further facilitates orders. :campfire:
WOW !!! Thank you guys. Please bear with me as you all know you're dealing with a redneck/woodsman and not a hi-tech guy. I've still never sent a text in my life. Anyway, the new DVD is finally finished and I have them in hand. This is my venture alone so I didn't want to dump all the paperwork and ordering onto Gene and brothersofthebow.com at his end. Right now we are having some website issues so until those get ironed out you folks will only be able to order the new DVD through myself. Just email me at: barrywensel@hotmail.com asking for the new DVD order. All OTHER stuff can still be ordered thru the BOTB website. But be aware if you order a new DVD it'll need to be checks or money orders because I'm not yet set up for paypal or credit card orders here. The new DVD is $20. plus $5. S&H. You'll need a six-pack and a pizza for this one. I edited highlights of over 700 hours of my personal bowhunting footage accumulated from the early 1960s. Relate 700 hours of footage to a normal 40 hour work week and you get an idea. Ha. I got it down to two 2 hour discs and edited them into a format of "chapters" similar to a book. Chapters not only include hunting memories from the last 50 years but chapters on passed up bucks; clean kills and even a very short chapter with misses. Additional chapters include bear hunting; bowfishing; hogs/javies; educational tips; shooting/practice; rare footage, including footage of a wild, free ranging potential WORLD RECORD typical whitetail buck. It's the stuff dreams are made of. I'm sure I'll probably get some heat somewhere down the road. But I tried to keep it as honest as I possibly could to hopefully light a fire in guys/gals to get out in the woods and make some memories. Thanks folks. BW
Thanks Barry......you won't get any 'heat' here I guarantee.
:campfire:
How awesome. Hate you weren't able to have them when you came to Louisiana but I'll send you an email and check after the first of the year. That should let you get caught up. Can't wait to see it !! Merry Christmas
Oh man, yes. Gotta put a check in the mail!
I am glad to hear you got it done Barry. I think I saw somewhere that you and Gene will be at K-zoo so I will pick up at least one there.
This is awesome can't wait to watch it and add it to my wensel collection
Wow! This is great Barry! Definitely gotta order one.
If you need help with the website, let us know! It's what we do. :)
I got to watch this video last night and the night before as it is a two disc set. It showcases the awesome story telling ability of Barry. I've known Barry and Gene for decades, but was honored to have them join the bowhunting video projects my two brothers, David and Mark, were working on which eventually came to completion as Primal Dreams and the sequel Essential Encounters. Due to the vast array of film footage and a narrow scope of these two films, the viewers were often left with the questions about what happened to the rest of the story related to many of the scenes and hunts. We were able to fill in some of these blanks by writing books during the last few years including one by Gene, Barry and myself, but even with that, many of the questions went unanswered.
Well, Barry has taken it upon himself to answer many of the questions directed at him through the production of this new DVD set. He not only takes the time to fill in the blanks surrounding hunts associated with P.D. and E. E., but gave us a wealth of information, stories, and techniques from the start of his bowhunting career to the present day. Both old and young can see themselves in this film. It shows how far we have come, and gives good direction for our future. Thank you Barry for telling your story, inspiring us, and your humor.... And thank you Gene for not suing your brother over it! Ha Ha Ha. Mike
This is awesome!!!
Yes!!!! Been waiting patiently for this one!!!
Just sent my check out today! Can't wait for this!
Check is in the mail, this is like waiting for the bow season opener. feel like a kid on Christmas eve.
Wife and sons were just asking me about a Christmas gift idea. Think I found one.
Looking forward to see it. I'll add it to the list of DVDs watched while on the bike trainer. Primal Dreams and Essential Encounters never get old but this will mix it up.
As Mike has alluded to, there is a lot to learn here in this DVD (as all the BOTB dvds) if you pay close attention. Really good stuff.
Ordered mine today
Sent my check out today. Can't wait
I have one on the way also can't wait to watch it over the holidays along with my thousand campfires book :readit:
Christmas has arrived!!!!!
Looking forward to this one can't wait to get it.
my check's in the mail, come on mailman don't fail me now!
There are so many good tips in this video. I sew a pocket on the inseam of my hunting pant down just below my knee. I set the limb tip of my recurve in there to take wait off the bow arm in the ready position when game are present. I see that Barry uses this technique as well.
A few years ago I suggested this pocket be sewn on the inseam of Sitka Gear pants. Sitka did accommodate this suggestion for several years on the Stratus, Early season Whitetail, and Fanatic pants. But we found out that everyone seems to shoot different length bows and styles and they have preferred locations that really need to be customized, so Sitka stopped adding the pocket. But, that does not mean you shouldn't. It only takes a few minutes and small piece of cloth or leather. Mike
This is actually pretty funny as I started doing this back in the '60s. In fact I used to cut the thumbs off of old leather gloves on my original set-ups. The leather was pretty hard to sew and after they got wet they'd shrivel up and get stiff. So I went to sewing cotton glove thumbs/fingers instead. Then a few years later they came out with fabric cement. I was a little skeptical on fabric cement at first but it actually works great. It dries over night. The next day it's strong enough to pull your Jeep out of the ditch. And it's waterproof so you can run it through the washer too. Try it.. you'll like it. I use those little bow-tip pockets about every day I hunt. And the best part is it's almost free. bw
Uncle Barry told me this tip about 25 years ago and I tried it. I didn't get it sewn on straight and it made me shoot to the left.....
Biggie, if you keep hitting to the left you need to move your treestand to the right. bw
If you don't want to move the treestand to the right, just try tuning with your hat. Move the bill of the hat to the right until you are hitting dead center.
I am happy this is out, looking forward to getting a copy
Barry, glad you got this done and remember talking about it over lunch at the St Augustin PBS Banquet one day. Now to beg my wife for a check...as she does not give me play money or the check book. LOL
I must be on Santa's "nice" list because I didn't get around to ordering a copy, yet one showed up in the mail today. Merry Christmas to me! Do I really have to wait until Christmas to open it?
Naw, just watch it, then put it under the tree
Mine arrived yesterday :archer:
Barry, will you be bringing DVDs to Kalamazoo???
Yes I'll be bringing the new DVDs to Kzoo. You'll save on the postage that way. Merry Christmas to all. bw
Barry,
Every time I have ever finished a major home project or remodeling job and am about to breathe a big sigh of satisfied relief, my wife will say, "You know what ELSE would be really nice to do???"
You have just finished a big project that has long been on your mind and in the works. It is the only item I put on my Christmas list and I'm looking forward to (hopefully) getting one...
... But do you know what ELSE would be really nice to do???
Since health has prevented me from attending one of your terrific bowhunting Boot Camps and you keep threatening to wind them down(!), I wondered if you have ever considered trying to put some what you teach there on video? There have been a few mentions of tips your students gleaned here on the forums, and I've always wished I could have been a mouse in the corner to hear the experience and knowledge you share at the Boot Camps.
I thought you might be about ready to breathe a big sigh of satisfied relief with your new DVD shipping and being enthusiastically received, so I thought this would be a good time to bring this up!
You're welcome!!! :saywhat: :saywhat: :saywhat:
Daryl
Got mine in the mail today ! Now if I can get the grandson to fall asleep and stop his movie I'll be in business !!
Daryl: This is pretty interesting really. I haven't told anyone about this yet. I've had multiple people tell me I should put one of my bootcamp sessions on video. It sounds good but I'm convinced it might not be the same as being there. I mentioned the fact watching a video of it would be similar to watching a war movie versus actually being in a war with bad guys shooting at you. It's a whole different perspective. That being said, I also feel there are "secrets" I've never divulged in my hunting techniques to many, if any. I'm getting up in years and I think it's time. I am having two whitetail bootcamp sessions this spring (2018). I know I've said it before but these will absolutely be my last ones. They are just too physically demanding on me. So, I've already started a new DVD venture that will (unless I'm totally wrong) open a lot of eyes and change the way a ton of whitetail fanatics will hunt for the rest of their lives.
I'll say right now that there is not one big secret, but there are a ton of pieces to the puzzle a lot of guys are missing. And it's the sum total of those pieces when properly placed that will increase your success dramatically.
Now the good news, I've actually started TWO new video/DVD projects. The first I plan to title "Out And About" (Out in the timber and About whitetails), with a sub-title of "Techniques and Strategies for Trophy Whitetails". My newest DVD "The Crooked Hat Chronicles" was compiled footage of over 700 hours of personal film/tape. It was a monumental task to edit that so it made some sort of sense. Yes, I added a few segments on tips and techniques but this next one will be the meat and potatoes rather than throwing out a crumb or two.
I've already got some of it filmed. Now it'll just be a matter of bringing some important stuff together without making it too overwhelming. I'm convinced a viewer has to be educated AND entertained a little in order to keep it interesting. Once finished it'll just be a matter of editing it before production.
Now, more good news. I've already started yet another DVD that will be totally different than any that have been done before (that I know of).
I shot that nice buck this fall on October 30, 2017 (173 6/8" 7.5 yr. old.. thank you very much God!) So.. just prior to that I had a brainstorm. I went into an area deep within a block of mature timber and set up a situation similar to how I normally hunt, except I didn't hunt it. I "detailed" the set-up; hinge-cut a couple trees; barricaded a little at precise angles; doctored a couple scrapes/ overhead limbs; raked it out to create some visuals and generally nudged their normal movement to one precise spot. Then I put a trail camera on that spot and set it up to record ten-second video clips rather than just photos. I put the camera out on October 24, 2017 then backed out for just shy of a month. What I ended up with was 458 ten-second video clips documenting the major portion of the whitetail rut this fall. Each ten-second segment contains the Date; time; moon phase; temperature, etc.
The end result was mind blowing in my opinion. You could watch wild, free-ranging whitetails going through the progression of their rut totally unmolested and natural. The viewer can watch/feel the pulse of the rut; the calm relaxed demeanor of the herd basking in the glory of a great mast crop and mild October days; then the temps start to drop, some frosts hit; the leaves turn brown and start to clear out. The smell is in the air. The bucks are ready but the does aren't. Cruising bucks; sparing; etc. Then all of a sudden someone flips the switch and the peak of the rut is apparent. Wow... active chasing at full speed, etc. You get to watch normal everyday deer activities that most of the food plot sitters have only heard about. Not only is it educational but it will light the spark on what it's really like when you/we aren't there.
I already had all 458 clips burnt onto DVD discs. Next I need to edit a master and do an audio overlay to explain some findings, then make a master and produce it. I plan on titling this one, "Charting The Whitetail Rut 2017".
Anyway... stay tuned and have patience. I'll get these done as soon as I can. Thanks. bw p.s. Daryl please send your USPS mailing address to barrywensel@hotmail.com and I'll send you a freebie of my Crooked Hat Chronicles just because you got the fire going under me again for the next ones. I like to share. Thanks. bw
Can't wait to see them all! I'll be sending my check in the next few days!
Barry,
I am truly excited to hear that you have those projects underway already. When the day comes (in 45 years or so) that you know longer feel up to getting out into the woods to hunt, you WILL still be hunting, after a fashion, as the people you've shared your tips and insights with head to the timber with bow in hand. That is a fine legacy for any outdoorsman, and it means a lot that you are willing to pass hard-won knowledge along.
I agree that a video will never capture the spirit and nuances of walking a property with you to learn, or listening in on the questions to flow out of the experience of a live Boot Camp. But, I won't be able to make it to visit your class in person (nor will many, many interested folks), and a video is infinitely superior to missing the lessons and information altogether. I'm in, in a heartbeat!
I hope this ends up being a gratifying project as it develops, and not too much of a burden. You are really providing a great service to those of us who have read your (and Gene's) materials throughout the years, followed your "exploits", and maybe even shared fond memories of a hunt or two together!
Thanks for a taking on a task that sounds like a lot of work... but a labor of love. I look forward to what develops out of what you are putting together. We appreciate you!
Daryl
Barry, got the "crooked Hat Chronicles" and got to watch an hour last night. It is in my opinion, awesome. Great footage and great hunts, thank you for taking the time and putting this together. It is well worth every penny. As always look forward to the future DVD's as well. You and your brother have a lot of information and knowledge and thank you for sharing it and ensuring it is not lost. Many of us know, that few if anyone will ever spend the time out there understanding free ranging whitetails as you both. My Grand children will cherish it as well.
I'll be looking forward to these!
Can't wait for the upcoming videos!
Got mine yesterday, awesome, watched part of first disc last night, my favorite part was the 101 year old buck, what a noble old warrior, thanks Barry for sharing your memories and can't wait for the ones with the tips, been learning from you and Gene since the classic whitetail seminars way back in the 80's.
Check's in the mail as they say...
Really looking forward to enjoying this video time and again!
Great effort Barry!! I'm sure it was tons of "work" and time to put it together.
Happy Holidays all,
Randy
Got mine today! Can't wait to watch! Thanks Mr. Wensel!
Barry, you should charge folks just to read this thread!!! :biglaugh: :biglaugh: :biglaugh:
Be on the look-out....there's going to be a thread here the day after Christmas....that's all I'm saying!
just got my copy yesterday :jumper: but not gonna watch it till x-mas nite (as a x-mas gift to myself)
merry x-mas to all!!
I am definitely watching my mail box a little closer these days.
I just put my check in the mail....I should not have drug my feet... :knothead: . Oh well, it will be a great way to spend a snow day after the New Year!!
Got mine in the mail today. I won't be watching any football games tomorrow. Thanks again Uncle Barry for getting this out for me. You are probably the only man in America that could get stranded in any town and never pay a dime for a hotel room. You Da man as we say way down South.
Anyone hanging on the edge should go ahead and get a copy. I watched over the weekend, its an awesome accumulation of everything bowhunting. How many knew Barry shot the first deer on production video. I remember watching "Bowhunting October Whitetails" back when I was in school. All that's on this plus much more. I got to admit its almost morbid Barry, like your history up to, so long folks its been a good ride! The respect Barry displays for the animals and nature are second to none.
Everyone around my house knows who the Wensels are. They truly define what is great to be an American bow hunter. Both my daughters love their respect for nature and the ultimate tribute they pay to the animal whos life they discriminatly took. I will not give you a penny for the current hunting shows on tv. Every product name out there make out like whitetail deer are domestic terrorists. As devastating as Wensel broad heads are they could've been named deer destroyers. They Wensels dont market their products like deer are the enemy. These guys love and have the up most respect for the animals they pursue. I watched the new dvd yesterday and truly enjoyed every last minute of it. Heck it even shows how to troll for deer!
Just finished watching the video, hands down one of the best videos I have seen! If you haven't ordered a copy yet, definitely do so you won't be disappointed! Can't wait for the next video! Thanks again Mr Wensel for a great video!
My wife gifted me the Video for Christmas and I'm half way through. :saywhat: Really enjoying it, thanks Barry & Kristen :goldtooth:
Watched it last night and tonight. Loved it!
Murray
Whew you didn't charge enough! Quite a lot for $25 shipped! Such a deal! Thanks Barry!
Just got mine in the mail. Looking forward to watching it.
I just finished it last night, this is in my opinion awesome job and footage. You even get to see a few misses, and know one thought "uncle Barry" missed, think he faked them, lol.
I requested a copy from Barry and can't wait to watch it. Toddster,it's funny to hear you talk about uncle Barry faking the miss. I remember the scene from October whitetails where Rick Blase calls out Barry on his miss LOL.
Started watching today. FANTASTIC!
TTT
If you have not bitten the bullet on this you are missing out. if you are a fan of Barry and Gene this is an absolute MUST HAVE for your collection. Got mine today and just finished the first DVD And this unseen footage is just so cool. Thanks for putting this out there for us. So generous of you to share it with this community. We love, respect and applaud you
:clapper:
TTT
An hour in so far and loving it!
Checks in the mail. Now to find time to watch it..... gotta send the family on vacation so I have some time...
I enjoyed it as well.
Did I see something at the end of the 2nd disk that there's another Crooked Hat Chronicle video in the works?
I hope Barry has the PayPal figured out. I ordered mine on Dec. 31, how long is the turn around.
Can't wait to get my hands on it! Be some good viewing on these cold days!
My wife does the paypals and she does them the same day we receive them if at all possible. So it shouldn't be long via 1st. class. I've had orders from Australia, Germany and Austria so far. So.. I guess I'm Internationally known now. Ha. bw
Thanks Barry, that's exciting news! I think your pretty well known, especially in the traditional bowhunting world!
Yeah Tom, I actually have two more in the works. Both are different than anything anyone has seen before. One will be "Charting the Whitetail Rut 2017". In a nutshell, I "set up" (detailed a prime area) in a remote location. Then I put up a trail camera to record 10 second video clips 24/7 between Oct. 24, 2017 and Nov. 9, 2017. Then, I didn't go anywhere near it, so everything I captured was natural movement/activities. I ended up with 458 ten-second video clips that are not only extremely interesting but very educational. I plan on editing them with an audio overlaying explaining what the viewer is watching. I'm proud to say I captured a pile of stuff on tape that a ton of bowhunters have likely never seen before.
The second one I'm working on will be titled "Out And About" (OUT in the timber and ABOUT whitetails) subtitle: "Techniques and Strategies for successfully taking fully mature trophy whitetails". It will include some of the basic bootcamp stuff I teach, but also some additional tricks of the trade I've not shared yet. By the way, the two bootcamps I have scheduled for this year were both sold out before I even announced them. I just had a couple cancellations if anyone is interested. I'm doing Kzoo in a couple weeks so I'm sure they'll fill. So, if anyone wants a slot now is the time to move on it. I know I've said it before but these will be my last two. Thanks folks. bw
I was snowed in yesterday so I watched it again!! Good stuff. I was lucky enough to see a lot of that footage with live play by play commentary from The Man himself while at his boot camp last year. One thing that I can say is that this man is STILL hunting hard as ever and he loves talking whitetails and sharing his knowledge. Looking forward to more!!
Mine arrived today. Watching it now with my son. So cool seeing footage from some of the stand locations we saw during the bootcamp.
I have watched the new DVD a couple time now. I enjoyed it a lot. Wonderful job Barry. Do you teach everybody how to swim across a river with a bow in one hand in the boot camps? Lol.
That scene of me swimming across the river with bow in hand, in the background you'll hear a voice saying "All right Barry.. a regular Tarzan". That's Paul Schafer's voice saying that. How ironic is that? Paul Schafer calling ME Tarzan?? HHHHHAAAAA. bw.
Can't wait to get my copy!
Cant wait to get mine. I just ordered off of the website, I guess its up and running again.
Uncle Barry, you can go ahead and put me down for the other two dvd's. See you in Kalamazoo, think they sale bourbon up there?
All I can tell you fellows is if you have not seen it you're missing out!
Great footage...great commentary... it's four solid hours of eyes-glued -to-the-tv viewing!
Thanks for sharing Barry!
I've really enjoyed it, well done!
Watching the footage from the October whitetail series, which inspired me to start filming my hunts, never gets old.
Keep them coming!!
Just finished watching. Thanks Barry,I too very much enjoyed the video. The October whitetail stuff is still the absolute best. That footage means a lot to me I guess because it's what I cut my teeth on as a bowhunter. I remember watching October whitetail with my dad an grandpa back in maybe elementary or middle school and i was hooked. The bows you used in October I an II and High nooon bucks were awesome. I'm guessing they were made by Paul. My favorite being the one in Highnoon with the treebark Camo on the limbs, awesome stuff.
I know you guys enjoy hearing the rest of the story. Yes, all those bows I used when filming Bowhunting October Whitetails, etc. were built by Paul himself and gifted to me. A sad note is I lost them all in our fire in '99. Funny story, The one I happened to be shooting when I shot those first two running bucks on Oct. WTs, years later Paul was over at my house and we were doing stuff in my work shed when he took that bow down off the hook and started laughing. I asked what was so funny? He looked at the bow and said "what are you kidding? This is a piece of junk" (well actually he didn't use the word junk. Ha.) Here he was bad-mouthing his own work, explaining how far he'd come since he'd built that "piece of junk". The bow obviously shot well though. Great memories. bw
I just got my copy in the mail and watched part of the first DVD last night. It brought back some great memories and made me wish that I had kept better records and pictures of my past hunts, harvest and friends. What a blessing to have so many "memories" and experiences recorded so you can share it! It isn't a "whack'em and stack'em" deer hunting video but a visual history of an iconic traditional bowhunter and his love for nature and the game he loves to hunt. It is a "must have" for any one that loves to hunt with a bow and arrow. My copy will be treasured along with my Fred Bear Master DVD Collection. Thank you Barry Wensel for sharing with us and God bless you and your family!
This will be a gift from my sweety for valentines. So looking forward to watching it.
It's been awesome so far. Lots of good laughs along with some great old footage and Barry interjecting every little bit. Helps to pass the time on these cold and snowy days.
Just finished watching both discs. Fantastic! Worth every penny.
I watched both disks on Sunday then went out hunting for the last evening of the season. Now that's a good day! The video is amazing. I love the old footage the most. Now Barry ya just gotta release the other 600 hours! Good stuff.
Mr. Wensel, I hope you're bringing enough DVD's to the Kalamazoo show!
So can we get this DVD via paypal now?
Hoping to pick one up at Kazoo as well. I'm excited to get a copy!!!
Yes, you can order it by opening your Paypal account and listing barrywensel@hotmail.com or you can also get it via paypal thru our new brothersofthebow.com website. I'll also have them at Kzoo too. Thank you all. bw
Finished mine, Barry....it's fantastic. Really enjoyed the old stuff but it's all great. You guys that haven't gotten yours yet are missing out!!!
Another outstanding video Barry! As others have said, if you haven't gotten yours yet, you are definitely missing out.
