Title: Anyone hunt South Dakota?
Post by: pokeanhope on December 03, 2017, 08:45:00 AM
I am looking at a hunt in South Dakota at the weidner ranch. It's in winner SD. Any one ever heard of this place, or hunted in that area? $500 for 5 day hunt with lodging. And then $50 per point if you kill one. 4K acres of working farm. 100% fair chase. Sounds good to me.

That would be 500 for a ten pointer.  Be ready for that.   Sounds like fun.  I think SD is a very diverse state, lots of different terrain, depending upon where you are.  I don't know where Winner is.

Years back, I wanted to hunt the  reservation land for antelope, back then the prices were very reasonable, actually cheaper than the state stuff. The tribe game managers were very forth coming about good places to go.

I hunted NW SD last fall and had a good time I had chances at a couple of bucks . But it was fairly over run by Minnesota hunters they were just about everywhere . I managed to find a spot that was off the road by a ways and got into some deer . Great terrain and SD people are so nice!

That is extreemly cheap. Have you asked the outfitter for past hunter references that you can contact? Not 100% but may gibe you some idea of what your getting.

There are some places that are like bed and breakfast and paid access for pheasant hunters.  They do try, for the most part, to coordinate the hunter densities.  The deer hunting is not the classic eastern Iowa stuff, some areas have lots of deer.

I hunt the Winner area often, but I'm not familiar with the terrain around the Weidner Ranch.  I can tell you that be prepared for lots of wind, a calm day is 10 - 15 mph.  Also, at least in my area, trees are far and few between, making getting close with a stickbow quite the challenge.  The deer seem to act more like antelope, bedding down out in the open in picked fields and pastures. A good ghillie suit would be worth the investment.
Good luck!

I've been in south east SD. Only place I've ever been that you have to lead a standing deer.

We pass through another area on the way to WY. The Black Hills, Rapid City...etc. Looks nice. I'm not sure if it is statewide but I think non-resident tags are pretty ilmited?

SE south Dakota and NW Iowa have had a very windy fall.  It is gusting to 40mph again today.  People don't understand wind drift until they hunt up here.  That Winner area has the hilly hay farmer areas.  One of my brothers had in-law relatives out that way, they rifle hunted for deer.  He got a small mule deer once.  He said that he had never seen a big buck where they went for a number of  years.  Another local super BSer claimed that in one place they came over a hill and saw three big mule deer.  He shot with his rifle until they were out of sight and figured he missed.  A friend of mine heard the same tale and told me that he came over the hill and over 50 big bucks all of them Pope and Young whitetails, the whitetails busted and left the mule deer behind.  Another area hunter went out that way, saw a few deer, but got busted for tresspassing taking a short cut back to his pickup.  I hunted on the ground east of Winner a number of miles, hoping for a west river mulee. I saw a few, more small whitetails.  I could have taken a few long shots, but it was windy and dry, until it rained.  My van and mud roads did not mix.  I did not get a deer.

I have a 2017 tag but haven't been able to get away this year.

What months do they offer the hunt?
