Title: feather burner
Post by: Ari_Bonn on November 07, 2017, 02:26:00 AM
So im trying to do the cheap way out and make a home made feather burner... already got my jig and everything figured out.  just trying to source a power supply.

train transformers are quite expensive to ship here.  I was thinking would a 40+w laptop charger work?  just cut the wire and split the +/- hook it up to my circuit.   Other alternatives?

I doubt that would work. I would think if you took apart an old toaster oven or maybe even a toaster or bathroom space heater you might find something that would work. I assume you guys have Goodwill second hand style stores up there, do a thread on the how to section if you figure it out!

Ended up finding and old Lionel transformer in the basement had to solder in a new power cord.

Pretty happy with how this turned out materials for the jig and 50ft of resistance wire only cost about 12. Better than buying a young feather burner for 12x more.

Really like the banana/shield shape.

I use an old car battery charger.  I've used jumper cables and a car battery in a pinch.

I was thinking of that but I don't have on older style car charger. The new ones would just cut out.

I traded for a Young feather burner and gave my home made burner to a friend.  After using the Young for a while I think I would rather use my home made burner.

An electric soldering gun works well as a power supply.

At one time the only commercial feather burner was made with a bare coiled wire wrapped around an insulator, used in houses. It had a knob on one end and was inserted through wood with old style wiring run through the center. It was common until Young came out with the burner. You'll find pictures in old magazines and books.

I believe I have seen one of those actually. In Old man Boorman's museum side of the shop.
