Title: can insert be removed from screw on head?
Post by: Sam McMichael on October 28, 2017, 06:34:00 PM
I have a number of Razorheads left over from my aluminum days. I would like to remove the threaded insert so I could use them on wooden arrows. Can they just be heated and pulled out? If so, does that damage the broad head?  I have some of the adapters that accept the screw in head and then glue to the shaft, but I don't like them.

I thought a while back that there was a thread on this, but a search did not find it for me.

Heat them up a bit, and pull them off.

Depends on who and how they are put on.  I have a couple of late model stainless heads that were sold with the inserts and I can't get them out.

If someone epoxied them aftermarket they might come off with heat but the heat could damage the temper.

If they are mounted with hot melt they should come off be they greenies or stainless.

The heat treating rules for stainless steel are not the same as for carbon steel.  Repeated exposure to dishwasher temps can ruin some stainless knives.

How do you plan on using the inserts from aluminum arrows on wood arrows?

I've pulled a bunch of them, Sam!!! With no ill effects...

Hold the head with a pair of pliers, then heat the threaded end of the insert. Use another pair of pliers to pull the insert out. Most are short insets, and come out very easily!

Like woodchucker said..heat the threads while holding the head.  Get the insert good and hot and the epoxy will melt or burn off.  If the inserts are aluminum they can melt if too hot so watch out for that.

Thanks, guys. All are just the way they were when they left the factory, so they should work out as you have described. Most are greenies, but some are stainless. I will give it a try.

A buddy tried to remove the insert on a stainless model.  He heated the point  cherry red and never got it off.

I've been around a while... But heck, i've never claimed to know everything!!? The only stainless steel Razorheads that I personally have seen... Were the "Super Razorheads".
The shank/body, was aluminum and threaded. One solid piece, no "insert"... The blade, was stainless steel.

I've never seen a stainless steel Razorhead, with a glue in insert?

Same here, woodchucker. I never have seen a glue-on stainless with a screw in insert. A one piece blue ferrule and a stainless blade crimped together is all I have ever seen.

The SS version is what I use for hunting.

That 'splains my experience!

all of my tuskers came with inserts.  10 seconds with a heat gun and they pop right out

Are we talking inserts or adapters here?  :dunno:

The threaded insert, that converts a glue on point, to a screw in/ interchangable point.
(I guess you could call it an "adapter"...?? But we've been calling them "inserts" for years)

They also make an "adapter" that glues on a wood shaft, that allows you to use interchangable points.

woodchucker, I have a bunch of those adapters but don't care much for them. That's why I want to remove the screw in insert. With the adapter, there are two chances for misalignment. The threads could be off a bit as well as the glue on portion being a little crooked. That makes good arrow flight more difficult. Plus, all the adapters I have appear to be aluminum - just not my cup of tea.
